A woman accused of cheating on her husband has reportedly been publicly thrashed and forced to 'marry' her alleged loved in a horrifying act of mob brutality.
The assault took placed in the Indian village of Madhya Krishnapur in the Daily Star reports on Saturday night (April 16), the Daily Star reports.
According to local police, the woman was taken to hospital for injuries sustained in the vicious attack.
Speaking to news agency Press Trust of India, Teliamura Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Sonacharan Jamatia said: "We will send a team to meet the victim to know the actual incident.
"The police has not received any written complaint yet, but there will be an inquiry into the alleged incident".
She told reporters that her husband led a group of fifteen men to a paddy field while accusing her of having an extra-marital affair.
The mob then began thrashing her, leading her to lose consciousness.
Her suspected lover was also physically harassed.
A video circulated on social media showed her surrounded by villagers after regaining consciousness, with them forcing her to exchange garlands with her alleged lover as a symbol of marriage as they made loud noises.
The video also showed some young people encouraging the husband to apply vermillion on the woman's forehead.
The husband reportedly admitted to local media that he and his family members beat her up for her alleged relationship with another man, who was from the same village as them.
He said: "After the incident, I took her to Teliamura hospital for treatment and I spent the whole night there. The police visited my residence".
Chairperson Barnali Goswami from the state-level Tripura Commission for Women (TCW) condemned the alleged incident.
