Emergency services say a 61-year-old woman is in hospital with serious injuries following a dog attack in the Palmerston suburb of Driver on Sunday.
St John Ambulance NT operations manager Craig Garraway said paramedics received reports of the attack just before 2am on Sunday morning.
When paramedics arrived, they were met by bystanders who were controlling the woman's bleeding, Mr Garraway said.
He said it was possible the woman could lose both her arms after the attack.
"The reports we had were that she had been mauled by a dog and the reports we had were quite horrific," he said.
"Reports of both arms being amputated from that episode."
The woman remains at Royal Darwin Hospital and is in a serious but stable condition.
In a statement on Monday afternoon NT Police said it was investigating the dog attack.
"At this stage we have not charged anybody, but we implore all dog owners to make sure their animals are properly trained, controlled and restrained."
NT Police said officers arrived at the scene of the attack and "an aggressive dog was secured inside the property".
Police said the dog was then surrendered by its owner to Palmerston Council rangers who attended shortly after.
Rangers seized a second dog on the property that also showed signs of aggression.
Palmerston Council CEO Luccio Cercarelli said investigations into what happened were ongoing, but the dogs had been "secured".
"The animals are no longer within the community or posing a threat," he said.
He said council was providing support to the rangers who responded to the incident.
