Police are hunting for the driver of a car who mercilessly mowed down a 60-year-old woman on Sunday night and fled the scene.
The woman was struck by the unknown vehicle shortly before 9.50pm on March 12 on the A6091 near Melrose, outside the Borders General Hospital. Police and ambulance crews attended and she was taken there quickly before being transferred to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.
Medics describe her condition as "critical" and the road has been closed while officers continue to carry out an investigation into the hit and run. Police have urged anyone who may have been in the area to contact police as soon as possible as they could hold information vital to tracing the driver.
In particular, detectives want to speak to the drivers of three cars – a silver Ford Fiesta and two red and white hatchbacks – that were in the area at the time of the crash. Cops have also urged the driver to "do the right thing" and come forward.
Chief Inspector Vinnie Fisher, Local Area Commander said: “We are appealing for the assistance of the public in tracing the vehicle involved and its driver as soon as possible. Our enquiries have established that there were three cars seen in the area at the time of the crash.
"They were a silver Ford Fiesta, a red hatchback and a small white hatchback. Work is ongoing to trace these vehicles and their occupants as part of this investigation.
“I would directly appeal to the driver of the vehicle who struck the woman to do the right thing and come forward. We are keen to gather any dash-cam footage and would urge anyone who was driving in this area around the time of the incident on Sunday night to contact us.
"You may have captured something vital to our enquiries. anyone with information should contact 101 quoting incident number 3303 of 12 March."
Locals with appointments at the Borders General Hospital are being urged to set off in plenty of time as the main entrance is closed off. NHS Borders said in a tweet: "The A6091 remains closed outside the BGH. Please follow @trafficscotland for updates and allow extra time if you are coming for an appointment this morning."
