Liverpool fell to a shock last-gasp defeat by Wolves in the Premier League on Tuesday night. Brazilian midfielder Andre, helped by a huge deflection off Joe Gomez, netted a dramatic stoppage-time winner for the top-flight’s bottom club as they upset the defending champions to continue their surprise recent resurgence under Rob Edwards.
Though still rooted to the foot of the table with relegation to the Championship surely inevitable, Wolves are at least now showing fight and restoring pride following an extremely difficult campaign having also stunned local rivals Aston Villa last week and held leaders Arsenal to a draw. They initially took the lead against Liverpool through another goal from substitute Rodrigo Gomes, whose fine lofted effort was followed by a Jean-Ricner Bellegarde error and swift equaliser from Mohamed Salah - who scored his first in the league since November 1 - as a previously tame contest suddenly burst into life.
Wolves would not be denied though as Andre popped up in the fourth minute of stoppage time, dealing a sizable blow to Liverpool’s hopes of a top-five finish this term as the two sides prepare to do it all again at Molineux in the FA Cup fifth round on Friday night.
