Internazionale are Coppa Italia champions! Full-time: Juventus 2-4 Inter!

Last season’s Scudetto winners are this season’s cup champs! Perisic’s double in extra time proves decisive. Two points shy of Milan in the Serie A standings, the domestic double is still on.

Premier League match reports!

Half-time in extra time: Juventus 2-4 Internazionale

Speaking of fellas with an excellent weak foot, Ivan Perisic has scored twice in extra time to give Inter a two-goal cushion in the Coppa Italia final! The first a penalty and the second an absolute ripper with his left!

Kevin De Bruyne speaks!

Yeah, a pretty nice evening. When you score four goals, it’s special. It should have been five! We could have scored more. It was impressive. My right is my stronger foot, but I’m never afraid to shoot with my left. We know we have a bit of an advantage [over Liverpool] but we need to recover and be ready for West Ham.

Madrid is very difficult to explain. It was a mad five minutes. It’s not that we played bad. I don’t know what happened. I was out of control on the bench. It’s not nice but we need to move on.

I play between a No 8 and a No 10. My favourite goal was the third one tonight. It was the cleanest hit, the purest.

The only downside for City is a potential injury to Laporte. City’s defence is already stretched, and now they could be without their Spanish international for Sunday’s trip to West Ham.

Full-time: Wolves 1-5 Manchester City

City are three clear of Liverpool at the top of the table and crucially they dramatically improve their goal difference, which could yet be decisive. De Bruyne is serenaded by the away support. What a performance, four goals!

Wolves 1-5 Manchester City: De Bruyne rattles the post! So close to his FIFTH goal of the evening and City’s 95th goal of the season. As if they are going to add Haaland to this. Crikey. Gabriel Jesus on the bench, not needed tonight.

End of 90 minutes: Juventus 2-2 Internazionale

We’re into extra time in the Coppa Italia final! A thriller at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

GOAL! Wolves 1-5 Manchester City (Sterling 84)

Sterling does get his goal, just moments after his woeful miss! This was a tricky fixture for City, with Wolves chasing European qualification, but they have made light work of it. A devastating City counter-attack, starting with one-touch stuff in their own half, and finishing as Grealish feeds Cancelo, who crosses for Sterling at the back post.

Wolves 1-4 Manchester City: A shocking miss from Sterling! Not that it matters much, but really is mesmerising how the 27-year-old failed to tap in at the back post after Foden’s pinpoint cross from the left. Instead, the ball bobbles under Sterling’s foot and dribbles wide. Moments later, De Bruyne picks up a yellow card for cynically stopping a Wolves counter-attack. I’d say it was a blot on his performance, but Pep will probably regard that as a very good foul to concede as City were outnumbered. Grealish comes on for Foden, and gets a ‘warm’ welcome on his return to the West Midlands.

St Johnstone’s win over Aberdeen tonight means Dundee have been relegated from the Scottish Premiership.

Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips has come out to face the cameras:

It was very difficult. You can see from our performance that we were very tired from Arsenal. We dug deep. I don’t know whether it’s nerves. The pressure is on though, we know that. From inside the camp, we’re always trying to stay positive. But we played a world-class team tonight. All we can do it look forward to the Brighton game, and try and rest. The performances haven’t been good enough this season, but we’ve got to try and make the fans happy.

Wolves 1-4 Manchester City: Foden hits the post! De Bruyne turns provider this time. He always seems to choose the right option. Wolves defenders are drawn to the run of Bernardo Silva on the right, but De Bruyne goes left with Foden in acres of space. The Englishman is clean through, steadies himself, and finds the foot of the near post. The ball rebounds out, and Wolves clear. Foden really should have scored there. He had all the time in the world to find the right finish and got it wrong (by about an inch).

Full-time: Leicester 3-0 Norwich

An easy win for the Foxes in a dead rubber. James Maddison netted a lovely third goal for Leicester.

Full-time: Watford 0-0 Everton

GOAL! Wolves 1-4 Manchester City (De Bruyne 60)

Stop it, Kevin. De Bruyne’s FOURTH goal of the night. He is single-handedly dragging City three points clear at the top. His least impressive goal of the night, picking up the scraps to sidefoot it home after Foden’s cross was botched by Boly.

Watford 0-0 Everton: It’s been a pretty dull performance from Everton. The game is now into stoppage time. It’s a point gained for the Toffees but it’s pretty turgid stuff at Vicarage Road.

GOAL(S)! Juventus 2-1 Internazionale

Juve score two in two minutes to turn the Coppa Italia final around. Dusan Vlahovic scores the second, after Alex Sando had scored the equaliser for the Old Lady.

In other news, Manchester United Under-18s have won the FA Youth Cup, beating Nottingham Forest 3-1 at Old Trafford in front of 67,000!

Chelsea should have third place sewn up with that. For Leeds, it was a miserable evening. Two games to go and they look favourites to go down.

Ange Postecoglou speaks!

I’m lost for words. An enormous effort. Nobody gave us much of a chance at the start of the year. It’s massive. Fans had a tough year last year, not just because they didn’t win anything, but also because [of Covid]. Our football has been outstanding. I couldn’t been more proud of them. It was a bit nervy, that’s only natural. We got the job done.

GOAL! Leeds 0-3 Chelsea (Lukaku 83)

Lukaku has his goal that his performance has threatened, although he very nearly made a meal of the finish. Werner crosses low to the Belgian, who really should have finished first time but instead took a touch, or rather about five of them, on the six-yard box. Leeds defenders furiously throw themselves in front of Lukaku but the big No 9 takes his time before driving his shot into the roof of the net!

“Ok KdB is quite good,” emails Tony Porter, “but when it comes to twofootedness he doesn’t get the prize until he takes corners with either foot like Santi Cazorla.”

Correct.

Leeds 0-2 Chelsea: Raphinha down, with a suspected injury. He’s clutching his hamstring. This night could not really get worse for Leeds. Dan James will be suspended for the rest of the season, and they can’t afford their best attacker to be sidelined. They need the Brazilian for the last two games, and it looks like he’s going to be OK, although it looks like Marsch is going to sub him off as a precaution. Yep, he’ll come off for Gelhardt. A penny for Raphinha’s thoughts. Rumours of a move to Barcelona continue to grow, and he’ll certainly be off if Leeds are indeed relegated.

Surely that is game over? Chelsea break down the right, James feeds Jorginho inside. GOAL! Wolves 1-3 Manchester City (De Bruyne 24)

The geezer is absolutely ridiculous. It’s a goal out of absolutely nothing, and all of his own making. De Bruyne nicks the ball from Neves, drives into the space and unleashes a howitzer low into the bottom corner with his left foot, before dropping the Haaland celebration for good measure. Well, I guess that wins the weaker foot argument. That’s a 17-minute hat-trick from the Belgian, and his first since 2011 when playing for Genk.

Half-time: Leicester 0-0 Norwich.

It’s been a poor game at the King Power. Jamie Vardy has been quiet. His wife, however, has had quite the day.

Wolves 1-2 Manchester City: De Bruyne is running the show. It’s not just his two goals. This is a masterclass of a performance. The best midfielder in the world, for my money. Nobody in old gold can get near him.

GOAL! Wolves 1-2 Manchester City (De Bruyne 16)

City are ahead once more! De Bruyne again makes the difference. Wolves just can’t contain City’s No 17, who makes a break from deep, flicks the ball towards Sterling. The Englishman can’t reach the ball, which rebounds off an outrushing José Sá, and De Bruyne gobbled up the rebound: his strike deflecting into the top corner from around the penalty spot. City have their three-point lead again at the top of the table, if things finish like this.

We have ourselves a game! A breathtaking counter-attack from Wolves punishes the league leaders. Jimenez wins the ball in midfield and releases Pedro Neto down the left. The Portuguese speedster flies into the City box and lays the perfect cut back to Dendoncker, who makes up 50-60 yards to finish first time from the edge of the foot. Dundee United 0-0 Celtic: Meanwhile, in Scotland …

RED CARD! Dan James is sent off! Oh, Leeds!

A straight red for the Welshman, who made an awful challenge on Kovacic. James looks shocked at the dismissal, but there’s no doubt that it was a dangerous tackle. James caught Kovacic high, half-way up the shin and flew in with some force. Could easily have been a leg breaker, but Kovacic is luckily going to be OK to continue. Marsch looks absolutely bereft but perhaps it is at the actions of his attacker. There was no need for him to make that tackle, which was in Chelsea’s half. The Blues should walk this now. One-nil up, and playing 10 men.

There’s also an interesting game in Germany, with Borussia Mönchengladbach playing Ukraine’s national team in a friendly fundraiser. Here’s some more background, courtesy of the Bundesliga website:

It will be Ukraine’s first fixture since Russia’s invasion and will not only raise money to help Ukrainians suffering as a result of the war, but also serve as a warm-up for the team’s FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 semi-final play-off against Scotland on 1 June.

Ukraine nationals wishing to attend the game will be able to do so free of charge, and the senior international team will be official guests of Gladbach after the game, staying at Borussia Park’s on-site hotel and using the club’s training ground from 10-12 May.

“We’re very happy to be able to help the Ukrainian FA through this game, and hope that as many football fans as possible from all over the country come to the stadium and make a donation to a good cause by buying a ticket to the match. All Ukrainian citizens will have free entry to the game,” said Borussia chief executive, Stephan Schippers.

“Out of curiosity, any clue as to why there are markings on the Leeds pitch?” asks Martin Shields via email. “Is it simply to tell the Leeds players where to stand while Chelsea works the ball around and through them?”

That will be the Challenge Cup semi-final at Elland Road last week. Maybe Leeds could have lined a few of those league lads on the goalline tonight.

Leeds 0-1 Chelsea: You fear for Leeds. They look so nervy. Mount sees another shot blocked after good work from Pulisic down the left. The home side have had just 35% possession in these opening 10 minutes.

Leeds 0-1 Chelsea: A woeful start from Leeds, whose gameplan has presumably gone out of the window in the first few minutes. Lukaku will be relishing the opportunity to bag a few goals tonight. Chelsea look like they are in the mood. Kovacic threatens to walk through the Leeds defence, before a crucial tackle from Phillips puts a stop to the Croatian.

GOAL! Leeds 0-1 Chelsea (Mount 4)

Well that didn’t take long! James (Reece, not Dan) finds some space on the right, drives into the box and lays the ball back to Mount, who comes onto it at pace and his a first-time pearler, which curls into the top corner. Could Meslier have done better at his near post? Probably not, that was right in the postage stamp. A sumptuous finish. Mount holds his hands to his ears to the home faithful. They aren’t exactly impressed.

Subs: Ake, Gabriel Jesus, Grealish, Steffen, Mahrez, Egan-Riley, Mbete-Tabu, Palmer, Lavia.

City’s well documented defensive problems mean that Fernandinho, 37 years young, starts at centre back tonight. He hasn’t played there since 2020.

Watford manager Roy Hodgson, soon to be former Watford manager Roy Hodgson, did this at Crystal Palace on Saturday; one of the funniest moments of this season for me.

The Hornets named their new manager today. Rob Edwards joins from Forest Green Rovers from next season. Frank Lampard and Everton will be hoping for a simple three points tonight.

It’s a big night for Lewis Bate. The 19-year-old spent 10 years at Chelsea, in the academy, but never featured for the first team. He joined Leeds last summer for £1.5m and tonight is his first Premier League start. His only other Premier League appearance, against West Ham in January, involved him coming on as sub in the 22nd minute before being subbed off just after the hour mark. Eeeesh. The lad must have done something good in training to convince Marsch he is right to face his former club tonight.

I have hundreds of quotes I use at different moments. I try to think how they fit with who I am and how we play football. I love quotes, learning from people of the past. Sports figures, historical figures, whatever. The key is understanding what messages to use at the right time. I use things that resonate with me … there are historical figures, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, presidents like John F Kennedy.

Jesse Marsch has been on fine form prior to Leeds’ big game tonight. Unsurprisingly, it formed the main part of the Fiver tonight.

Preamble

What an evening of association football we have in store for you tonight. You lucky, lucky things. With the exception of Leicester v Norwich, which is a stone-cold dead rubber, all of the Premier League fixtures tonight have something juicy riding on them. Namely, of course, the league title with Manchester City looking to re-establish their three point advantage over Liverpool with a trip to Europe-chasing Wolves.

That’s the late-kick off. The early one is a fixture that screams 1960s: Leeds v Chelsea. Simply put, it is a humungous game at Elland Road, with Leeds’ woeful goal difference meaning they will need to better Burnley and Everton in the final three games of the season – Everton travel to already-doomed Watford tonight. Brighton and Brentford should provide easier tests for Leeds but it is an excellent time to play Chelsea, who are now in danger of spectacularly blowing it. Tuchel has gone into crisis mode.

Elsewhere, we’ll also be reporting on fitba, with Celtic able to wrap up the title tonight at Dundee United. It really is a formality, with the Bhoys leading Rangers by six points and 20 goals with two games remaining, but a draw or win tonight (or if Rangers fail to win) will rubber-stamp the trophy for Ange Postecoglou and co.
