Premier League: “Two aspirant clubs, a pair of transformative managers, both aiming to crash the elite,” writes John Brewin from Villa Park. “Both coaches deeply admire the other, but it was Roberto De Zerbi, lately linked with Real Madrid, who received a lesson from the greater wiles of Unai Emery, and a masterclass in centre-forward play by Villa’s Ollie Watkins.”
Scottish Premiership: Motherwell thought they’d rescued an excellent point against Celtic when Blair Spittal cancelled out Luis Palma’s opener in the sixth minute of added time at Fir Park. Brendan Rodgers’ side were having none of it, however, and scored a late, late winner courtesy of Matt O’Riley within 60 seconds. Celtic stay top, five points clear of St Mirren. Motherwell remain in fourth place.
Championship: Southampton have halted a run of four consecutive defeats with a 3-1 win over Leeds United, who dropped into the Championship with them last season. Leeds stay in sixth place with 13 points, while Southampton are three places behind them in ninth on goal difference.
