Wolves told they made 'big mistake' about Conor Coady as price Everton will have to pay emerges

Wolves legend David Edwards believes the club may have made a mistake in letting Conor Coady depart on loan to Everton this season.

Coady, who was previously the captain of the Midlands outfit, joined Everton on a season-long loan this summer with the option to buy following the conclusion of his spell at the club. A report from the Telegraph last night suggested that the Blues 'will have to pay only £4.5million to sign England international next summer'.

Coady, a key figure at Molineux where he made more than 300 appearances between 2015 and 2022, has settled straight into life at Goodison Park, scoring his first goal for the club in the 2-1 triumph at Southampton on Saturday. Wolves, however, have had a difficult start to the 2022/23 campaign as they sit 18th in the table with just six points from a possible 24.

They parted ways with manager Bruno Lage earlier this week, following the 2-0 loss at West Ham United, and Edwards says the Portuguese coach got some big decisions wrong, including letting Coady move on.

“I think it was only four or five players who went over at the end of the game (against West Ham), and that makes me think Bruno made a big mistake in some of the players he let go," he wrote in his column for the Express and Star. "Such as Coady, John Ruddy and Romain Saiss.

“When you lose players who have been at the football club for a long time, all of a sudden, you lose a little bit of soul out of the dressing room. People who know the football club, and know what is expected of a Wolves player.

“I guarantee if Coady was playing on Saturday, every single one of those players would have been over there to clap the fans. My worry is when the chips are down, who is in there to galvanise them and show what it means? I feel that is one area where possibly Bruno did go wrong.”

Coady has so far made seven league appearances under Frank Lampard and got on the scoresheet for the first time in Blue last time out. His goal drew Everton level at Southampton before fellow new boy Dwight McNeil also broke his duck for the club to earn a victory that moved them up to 11th in the table.
