Wolves boss Bruno Lage reacts to Arsenal celebrating 'like they won the league'

Bruno Lage insists Arsenal 's celebrations were "not a problem" after they secured a dramatic late win to boost their top-four hopes on Thursday night.

The Wolves manager watched his side lead the Gunners for well over an hour before Nicolas Pepe cancelled out Hwang Hee-chan's opener and Jose Sa scored a 95th-minute own-goal.

The last-gasp winner sent the Emirates into frenzy and handed Mikel Arteta's side their second narrow victory over Wolves in the space of two weeks.

Due to a coronavirus postponement in December, Arsenal have faced the Midlands club twice in the Premier League in quick succession.

They won 1-0 at Molineux earlier in February thanks to Gabriel's strike and withstood a barrage of Wolves attacks after Gabriel Martinelli was sent off in the second half.

Having clung on with 10 men to snatch all three points, the Gunners celebrated their slender win emphatically with their travelling supporters.

This did not go down well with Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves, who accused the visitors of acting like they had "won the league".

"We saw the way they celebrated the win and that shows the level we are," the Portuguese said. "I didn't see Arsenal celebrating like this in the past 10 years - it was like they won the league."

Neves' comments led to back and forth with Highbury legend Ian Wright, who taunted Lage's side by writing "still celebrating" in social media post.

Due to the rapturous nature of the scenes in the Emirates in midweek, Wolves may have felt Arsenal were trying to rub salt in their wounds and advance the rivalry between the two clubs.

However, Lage has defended their right to celebrate a hard-earned victory by pointing out just how difficult it is to win games in the Premier League.

"Football is about that, about celebrating goals," Lage said. "When you win in the last minute you need to celebrate in the best way you can, because it's very hard to win games in the Premier League. For me, it's not a problem."

Arteta shares Lage's stance and was pleased to see the delight on his players' faces as they moved one step closer to securing Champions League qualification.

The Gunners boss said: "I encourage them to celebrate every victory because you can see how difficult it is in this game to win matches.

"Our supporters the same, every time we win we should celebrate because when you lose or draw you know how it affects us."

Arsenal are next in action against Watford in early March while Wolves travel to West Ham on Sunday afternoon.
