Wolfsburg made a swift coaching change by appointing Ralph Hasenhuettl as their new coach following the departure of Niko Kovac. The decision came after Wolfsburg suffered a 3-1 home defeat to Augsburg, marking their third consecutive league loss. Hasenhuettl, an Austrian coach with previous Bundesliga experience at RB Leipzig and Ingolstadt, as well as a stint at Southampton in the Premier League until 2022, will be officially introduced on Monday.
Wolfsburg's managing director Marcel Schaefer emphasized the need for a new direction to provide the team with fresh impetus and stabilize their current situation. The team's struggles have been evident, with their last league victory dating back to December 16. Wolfsburg has now endured an 11-match winless streak in the Bundesliga, leading to their drop to 14th place in the league standings.
Hasenhuettl has signed a longer contract with Wolfsburg and is set to take charge of training starting from Tuesday. The club did not disclose the specific duration of the deal. Kovac, who previously managed Bayern Munich, took over at Wolfsburg at the beginning of the 2022-23 season and guided the team to an eighth-place finish in his debut campaign. However, the current season has been challenging, with Wolfsburg currently sitting on 25 points, just six points above the relegation playoff position.
