The WNBA experienced significant growth in viewership and attendance this year, setting the stage for players to seek a larger share of the league's financial success. The players union and league have until November 1 to potentially opt out of their current collective bargaining agreement, with indications pointing towards the players choosing to do so to address various demands.

One of the key factors influencing this decision is the WNBA's recent landmark 11-year media rights deal with Disney, Amazon Prime, and NBC, valued at $200 million annually. This development has prompted players to push for increased salaries and improved benefits.

Meetings within the players' union have been ongoing, with discussions revolving around desired improvements and the upcoming decision to opt out of the current agreement. Despite the challenges of navigating these negotiations during the ongoing season, players are determined to advocate for their interests.

If the union does opt out, the current collective bargaining agreement, originally set to expire in 2027, will remain in effect for the next season, allowing both parties a year to reach a new agreement.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert emphasized the importance of collaboration and dialogue between the league and the players, highlighting the potential for further growth and development. She acknowledged the league's progress in securing a new media rights deal and expanding corporate partnerships, which have contributed to enhancing the league's strength and visibility.

Players, including prominent figures like Breanna Stewart, have outlined several priorities for the upcoming collective bargaining agreement. These include considerations such as pensions, improved child care benefits, increased salaries, and formalizing the charter system introduced this year.

Stewart also expressed the players' desire for greater financial opportunities, such as the ability for teams to have million-dollar players and aligning salary caps with the league's TV deal. These aspirations reflect the players' commitment to advancing their rights and securing a more equitable future within the WNBA.

As negotiations progress, both the players and the league are poised to engage in constructive discussions to address the evolving needs of the players and further elevate the WNBA's standing in the sports industry.
