A new American soccer expansion story could soon be taking place on a vacant plot of land in Mesa, Arizona, the former site of a shopping mall anchored by Sears. Vicki Mayo, the woman leading a charge to bring top-tier professional soccer to the area, has plans for that land, located a traffic-free 20-minute drive from downtown Phoenix: the future site of a 25,000-seat soccer-specific stadium, fully enclosed, with a natural grass pitch.

The stadium and early expansion efforts appear to be primarily aimed at entrance into the NWSL. According to Mayo, 20,000 people have signed a fan initiative aimed at attracting a team from the women’s league to the prospective stadium.
