With new multi-year contract, Bill Belichick will get another chance to rebuild the Patriots

The New England Patriots come into Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills with a 1-5 record. Their point differential of -80 is the NFL’s second-worst, behind only the New York Giants (-96). Bill Belichick’s team ranks 28th in Total DVOA. 29th in Offensive DVOA, and 14th in Defensive DVOA. Quarterback Mac Jones has been a disaster in Bill O’Brien’s offense, and a lot of head coaches would be under the gun and on the hot seat and all other applicable cliches in this instance.

Of course, most head coaches are not Bill Belichick.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Belichick signed a new multi-year contract this past offseason, so he’ll be given the opportunity to rebuild what needs to be rebuilt.

The 71-year-old Belichick is just one win away from becoming the third head coach in NFL history with 300 regular-season wins, joining George Halas and Don Shula. Belichick is also in range of Shula’s 328 wins, the top total in pro football history.
