London is the greatest capital city in the world. It is a leader in ideas, innovation and industry. I am proud to have lived, worked and been a councillor here. I know the huge challenges Londoners face, from making ends meet, to getting to work, to walking the streets safely.
As ballot papers for the leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party arrive, we need bold leadership to take our capital and our country forward. I am stepping up to the plate to provide that, with a clear vision for our future and the proven experience to get us there.
I will fix Mayor Sadiq Khan’s failings by growing London’s economy, making streets safer, and stopping the never-ending strikes on TfL services.
I know Londoners are struggling with the cost of living, and some of the poorest parts of our country are in the capital. I am the only candidate who will offer immediate help by slashing taxes. This is Conservatism in action: rewarding those who work hard by putting more money back in people’s pockets.
When London does well, Britain does well. Last week I met business leaders in the capital to discuss how we can drive job creation and growth through investment.
I will be pro capital, pro the City and pro financial services as prime minister. I will transform more of our country through the power of free enterprise in the same way the Docklands were turned into the thriving streets of Canary Wharf that now form part of London’s iconic skyline.
Levelling up does not mean leaving the capital behind. I will free the City of London from the burden of onerous regulation, pushing through reforms to Mifid and Solvency II.
Since Sadiq entered City Hall we have seen a shocking rise in crime. This has been his biggest failure as mayor. I will deliver more police officers on the beat and set a target for the Met Police to cut crime by a fifth by 2024.
For London to thrive, we have to keep it moving. Sadiq should not be penalising Londoners to fill his TfL black hole by expanding the ultra-low emission zone and cutting bus routes. We should be looking at better ways of improving air quality, not clobbering hard-working people at the whim of a Labour mayor.
Sadiq is too timid to stand up to the hard-Left union barons, while Labour MPs rush to join them on the picket line. But I will take them on by using emergency legislation to make it harder for the transport unions to paralyse the city through strike action.
It is vital London thrives not just for people in the capital but across our country. People can trust me to lead us through these turbulent times and ensure our greatest days lie ahead.
