Cathie Wood's warning arrives at an uncomfortable moment for memory chip investors. Speaking in Hong Kong on Oct. 13, the Ark Invest founder warned that traditional memory chipmakers remain locked in boom-and-bust cycles, and that China’s expanding production capacity risks making those swings even sharper. “The trend is up, but the cycles are vicious,” Wood noted. “If you get a few more incremental competitors, especially out of China, the volatility will increase.”
These comments come at a moment when high-bandwidth memory (HBM) remains in short supply for artificial intelligence (AI) accelerators. The result, in Wood's view, is a classic setup for sharper price volatility once supply eventually catches demand.
