Wishaw walkers raise thousands for charity thanks to Kiltwalk

A Wishaw charity’s bank balance was given a major boost following the first Kiltwalk since the pandemic.

Over 60 walkers took on the challenge for the DreamMaker Foundation raising thousands of pounds to help children with life-limiting illnesses across Lanarkshire.

The charity’s founder, Les Hoey, said there was a "great team" of around 40 from Wishaw and another 25 across Lanarkshire.

He told Lanarkshire Live : “That’s my last year, my ankle is gubbed this morning. I had to get it strapped up with three miles to go and I’ve got a huge blister on my ankle.

“But the weather was glorious and we got a great day for it.

“The atmosphere was good. The organisers had the Red Hot Chilli Pipers playing as we were finishing.

“At the moment we don’t have an exact figure but we reckon we could raise between 25 and £30,000 which includes the top-up from the Hunter Foundation.

“We would like to thank everyone who did for us. I’d recommend it to anyone, it’s a great day out.”

A crowd of more than 10,000 Kiltwalk Heroes mounted a tartan takeover of Glasgow raising a whopping £3m for charities across Scotland.

As is Kiltwalk tradition, every £1 raised receives a generous 50 per cent top up from The Hunter Foundation.

Sir Tom Hunter said: “I regard the success of Kiltwalk as one of the Foundation’s greatest achievements.

“It was a joy to see so many of our Kiltwalk Heroes out in their tartan this morning at Glasgow Green.

“Their kindness means the world to me and to Scotland’s charities, and I can’t stress enough how much it’s appreciated in these toughest of times.

“After a challenging few years, Scotland’s charities benefit from every donation so Kiltwalkers should be very proud of the difference they have made today.

“This has been a flying start to Kiltwalk 2022, well done everyone!”
