A Wishaw primary school is going for gold after gaining the top Rights Respecting Schools Status.
St Aidan’s Primary celebrate achieving the Gold Award from UNICEF UK, for fully embedding children’s rights throughout its policies, practices and ethos.
Gold Rights Respecting is the highest accolade given by UNICEF UK and shows a deep and thorough commitment to children’s rights at all level of school life.
Children at St Aidan’s played a leading role in driving progress on the Rights Respecting School awards, as they have progressed from Bronze, to Silver, to Gold over the last four years.
St Aidan’s headteacher Sandra McLean said: “No matter what our children bring to the table they know they are listened to and can create change.
“Introducing a rights based approach has been a driving force for this, they want to be able to change the world, and we want them to know that they can.”
To celebrate their wonderful achievement, St Aidan’s pupils participated in a Rights Respecting Gold Award Fun day in June, with lots of events happening within the nursery and school.
The events were all organised by the Rights Respecting Steering Group members. Special guests were invited to share in their celebrations.
Clare McGeough, principal teacher and rights respecting lead, said: “We are a school that wants to make a difference across the world.
“The children now have more of an awareness of the wider world, they have seen first-hand how global situations can deny them of their rights (education during lockdown) which has given them first-hand experience.”
