Wirral's rat league - the parts of borough with the worst rodent problems

New data shows the places in Wirral with the highest number of call-outs for pest problems including rats, fleas and wasps.

Overall there were 799 requests to deal with pests between April 2021 and 2022 with rats and mice making up 69% of these.

The number of call outs has been lower in the last three years as there were 1,201 requests in 2018 and 1,000 the year before that.

The number of call-outs tends to be highest in built up areas with Birkenhead coming out number one in four of the last five years. The only year it didn’t was when Oxton topped the list in 2018 with 104 requests that year.

Other areas with high rates of call-outs over the last five years include Tranmere, Moreton, and Oxton.

Pest control is dealt with by the council’s in-house team with the council spending more than £183,000 last year. It charges £93 for two visits to deal with mice, £168 to deal with cockroaches, and nearly £300 for bedbugs.

However the number of requests in Wirral pales in comparison to Liverpool where seven areas had more than 300 callouts in 2022.
