Wirral Magistrates' Court reopening pushed back again

The reopening of Wirral Magistrates’ Court has been pushed back again, with its closure set to run into a sixth week.

The court was closed at short notice back on April 21, with Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) announcing it in a statement online the evening before. That statement said that a “building issue” was being investigated and hearings would be relocated or rescheduled.

Originally set to end just under a week later, Wirral’s closure has been extended a number of times. HMCTS announced its opening would be pushed back by two weeks and then, later, by another three. Those delays meant it was finally set to reopen tomorrow (Monday) but last week HMCTS said that date would also be missed.

The latest update said: “Wirral Magistrates’ Court will remain closed while essential building work continues. We'll contact parties affected and we're sorry for any inconvenience caused. For urgent enquiries call 0151 473 7373.”

The ECHO understands it could still be a number of weeks before Wirral is able to reopen as work continues to take place within the building. HMCTS has not revealed what the cause of the issue within the building is.

The closure of Wirral has a knock on effect across Merseyside, with the region’s two other magistrates courts in Liverpool and Bootle taking on some of Wirral’s cases.
