Nathan Chen breaks world record in stunning figure skating routine
American skater Nathan Chen earned an elusive Olympic gold medal today following his record short programme with a near-perfect free skate that earned him a standing ovation from supporters inside historic Capital Indoor Stadium.
The 22-year-old is the seventh man to win gold for the United States in men’s single after he easily outdistanced his two closest pursuers, Yuma Kagiyama and Shoma Uno of Japan, and earned himself a solid 332.60 points.
Defending champion Yuzuru Hanyu, landed himself the fourth spot, as his compatriot claimed the silver and bronze for the country.
The Americans took another gold earlier in the day after Chloe Kim successfully defended her title in the women’s halfpipe final.
Kim, who at 17 became the youngest woman ever to win Olympic gold in snowboarding at the Pyeongchang Games in 2018, roared back in style as she easily edged out Spanish rival Queralt Castellet, who took the silver medal.
