Winners announced for latest East Kilbride Beat the Street challenge

The winners have been announced for the latest Beat the Street East Kilbride challenge.

The interactive game took place over six weeks in September and October and saw 11,802 people walking, cycling and rolling for points and prizes.

Beat the Street EK ended at 7pm last Wednesday but for the three days prior to that, participating schools were invited to take part in an inter-school flag relay to celebrate the community’s achievements.

Players together totalled 151,588 active travel miles, which also meant that organisers donated £500 to Kilbryde Hospice, which provides end-of-life care and support to patients and families in South Lanarkshire.

East Kilbride's Crosshouse Primary came out on top in the schools' total points leader board while Long Calderwood Primary topped the average points leader board.

First place for community and workplace teams' total points went to EKCC Juniors while the average points winner was Beggin for a Biscuit.

Meanwhile 'Phats and Small' won the small teams category and the individual winner was a Rebecca C.

And one enthusiastic participant managed to visit every Beat Box in the game – all 81 of them.

Despite not joining the game until nearly a week in, David Edwards tapped all Beat Boxes.

Initially, he was tapping 20 on each morning run, but then switched to cycling.

He told Lanarkshire Live: “I thoroughly enjoyed taking part and I think it's a great experience for everyone in the community.

"I decided to take part in Beat the Street as the school that my grandson, Ben Collier, attends - Kirktonholme Primary - were participating.

"I initially went round my local Beat Boxes as part of my morning run, but thought that it would be an interesting challenge to see if I could possibly get round to all of the Beat Boxes in East Kilbride.

"I found that the event encourages people to discover areas of their town and also to find the best shortcut routes between Beat Boxes.

"I am really hopeful that Beat the Street will return to East Kilbride next year following the undoubted success of this year's event.”
