Wine expert shares why you should never put cork back in bottle - and what to do instead

Picture this: you've had a long day at work, you really need to unwind, and you realise you've got one of your favourite bottles of wine in the fridge. So you treat yourself to a glass, savouring every last drop. But then you decide you've had enough for the evening, so you replace the cork ready to enjoy the wine another day and head to bed. Can you tell what's wrong with this scene?

Contrary to popular belief, you shouldn't have put the cork back in the bottle, or at least so says one expert. Sommelier and self-titled wine educator Warner regularly shares tips and tricks with wine lovers on TikTok as @confidenceuncorked, and her latest video solves one of the most common problems.

In a video dedicated to leftover wine - one that has amassed 1.8 million views - the pro explains why the cork method is not the way to go and offers a different solution.

"I know it sounds crazy," Warner prefaces her video, before she explains: "But if you ever have an instance where you have leftover wine don't put the cork back in the bottle. I have a way better tip that's gonna change your life."

"If you were to put the cork back on a bottle of wine that's half empty, you'll see, half of this still has oxygen inside it," she continues while holding up a half-full bottle. "Corks are porous - this is going to allow oxygen to get into your wine - not great.

"What you really want to do is reduce the amount of oxygen to wine ratio." How do you do this you might ask? The answer is simple.

Warner recommends using a mason jar or similar airtight container to store your leftover tipple. "I swear by this," she added. "It will make your wine still taste fresh even a couple days after you've opened it."

Delighted, viewers were quick to thank the expert for the helpful advice. "So smart but simple," read one reply.

A second said: "Plus it fits in your fridge!"

Meanwhile, someone else joked: "Leftover wine. I've read about it but never experienced it. I thought it was an urban myth," and another person quipped: "Leftover wine? Never heard of that.."

A different commenter thought: "Orrrrr you could just get a quick hand pump and vacuum seal it," but Warner replied: "Vacuum pumps are great! I love mine and use it all the time. Mason jar is great when bottle is less than 1/2 full [in my opinion]."
