Storm Malik: Strong winds of up to 50mph to hit Nottinghamshire this weekend

Nottinghamshire and the wider East Midlands is bracing for strong wind gusts of up to 50mph as Storm Malik blasts much of the country.

The Met Office says the weather this weekend will be "very windy, with gusts 40-50mph, strongest for northern areas."

It comes amid the arrival of the storm in Scotland, which has brought strong winds to the north of the UK.

The impact of the strong gusts are already being felt across the East Midlands.

In Derbyshire a major road has been closed due to high winds and fallen trees.

Officers from Derbyshire Police say they are currently dealing with an incident of fallen trees on the A57, known as Snake Pass, in north Derbyshire.

Speaking of Saturday's (January 29) forecast, the Met Office says: "Becoming very windy, gusts 40-50mph across northern areas, perhaps isolated 55-50mph over the Peak District, and 40mph elsewhere.

"Light rain across the Peak District, with cloudy and patchy light rain and drizzle elsewhere, clears south this afternoon. Late sunshine follows. Maximum temperature 12 °C."

And it looks set to continue into Sunday (January 30)

The Met Office added: "Frosty start, with bright or sunny spells before clouding over, and patchy rain arriving later. Becoming windy through the evening and overnight, risk of local gales across northern areas. Maximum temperature 7 °C."

Storm Corrie will bring strong winds eastwards from Scotland and into England from tomorrow - running concurrently with Storm Malik, which begins its menace today, the Mirror reports.

MET Office Chief meteorologist Dan Suri said: “Storm Corrie will bring very strong winds to the north of the UK, especially northern Scotland, on Sunday. This follows just one day after Storm Malik moves though also bringing a spell of very strong winds.
