Windrose's first mods are already adding quality-of-life improvements "for captains who'd rather be chasing horizons than managing menus"

Windrose early access release trailer shows a pirate wielding a sword, walking along a beach.

Open-world pirate survival game Windrose has gotten off to a flying start on Steam since its early access launch last week, and it appears that modders have been working just as hard as the devs when it comes to making improvements.

While developer Kraken Express has already patched out a number of bugs in Windrose, with more to come, fans have taken to mod platforms like Nexus Mods to share their own quality-of-life improvements, faster than you can say "yarrrr."

Currently, one of the most popular fan-made additions found on Nexus Mods is "Expanded Horizons – QOL Plus," which, according to creator RenDestefani, "focuses on reducing tedious downtime, expanding your storage capabilities, and rewarding exploration with better resource scaling." Specifically, they note that the pirate's life in Windrose is currently "more about counting sticks, waiting for ores to melt, and running out of pocket space before you even leave the docks."

With changes including bigger capacity for chests, backpacks, and ship inventories (and larger stack sizes for items), reduced timers on wood and copper processing, certain resources now set to occasionally drop way more than they currently do, and more, the modder says this is an "upgrade for captains who'd rather be chasing horizons than managing menus."

Increasing the default stack size is a common change – a couple of the other most popular mods on the site right now are both specifically for this. Other current favorites include a mod to increase your stamina and increase harvest multipliers for mineral resources.

Obviously, being in early access, the devs at Kraken Express are no doubt going to be looking to make improvements over time – who knows, they might even be planning changes like these already (and if not, these might serve as inspiration). Just yesterday, it was noted in a message by producer "Yar_master" Phil in the game's official Discord server that "we do have a very high level roadmap consisting of future biomes (Ashlands is already teased in the game and that's going to be the next one obviously), and game plot key points."

However, it doesn't sound like Kraken Express plans on showing that off immediately. "Currently our goal is to populate this high level plan with a combination of our gameplay ideas, new content, and popular community requested features so we have a full scope of the next major update. Then we will be happy to share it with you and maybe even show off some WIP stuff," it's stated.

Windrose sells 1 million copies in less than a week, and as the open-world pirate game passes 220,000 concurrent Steam players, devs say the support is "absolutely astonishing."
