Windows of former school smashed in overnight attack

An attack on a former Ballyfermot school which left windows smashed has been condemned by local councillors.

The attack on the former De La Salle primary school occurred last night. The site was sold by the De La Salle order and there is now a granted planning permission for 900 apartments on the site.

Councillors for the area previously agreed to make a request with the owners for the building to be used to house Ukrainian refugees. In a joint statement Ballyfermot councillors said: "The attack on the former De La Salle school is totally unacceptable. There can be no excuse for these actions.

"Dublin City Council has been contacted, requesting that they ensure the owners immediately secure this building. The former De La Salle school lands were sold to private developers by the De La Salle order.

"The site has remained dormant since with planning permission for 900 apartments granted by An Bord Pleanála. At the recent Area Committee meeting a motion was passed requesting that Dublin City Council contact the owners to see if they would be interested in allowing the building to be used as temporary accommodation for Ukrainian refugees.

"We would urge the developer to secure the building and engage directly with the local community. This is a major development and we want to ensure local residents are consulted with before construction starts."

The comments were supported by local Cllrs Daithí Doolan, Hazel de Nortuin, Vincent Jackson, Sophie Nicoullaud and Daithi de Roiste.
