Wimbledon: Elina Svitolina beats injured Venus Williams in first round

NEW DELHI: Elina Svitolina made a remarkable comeback after a shaky start to defeat five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams 6-4, 6-3 in the first round on Monday.

Despite losing her first service game to the experienced American, Svitolina quickly broke back. However, Williams, who is 43 years old, slipped on the grass of Centre Court, falling to the ground in pain and clutching her right knee, which was already strapped. Svitolina took advantage of the situation, narrowing the score to 2-1.

Although Williams managed to continue after receiving treatment from the trainer, Svitolina maintained her composure. Williams tried to aggressively hit winners but was broken again in the fifth game, resulting in Svitolina winning the opening set 6-4.

In the second set, Williams faced an uphill battle as she was broken in the first game and missed a break point opportunity in the following game. Svitolina, a former world number three who is currently ranked 76th, broke Williams once more, securing a 4-1 lead.

While Williams showed impressive mobility and broke back to make it 5-3, she couldn't sustain her momentum. Svitolina broke her again, concluding the set 6-3, and the final decision was made through a video referral.

As Williams left Centre Court, she received a standing ovation from the crowd and waved in acknowledgment, despite her apparent dissatisfaction with the umpire. This Wimbledon marked her 24th appearance at the All England Club, setting a record for the most appearances in the Open era. It's worth noting that when Williams made her debut in 1997, 53 players in the 2023 draw hadn't even been born yet, including Svitolina, who was just two years old at the time.
