Wimbledon 2026 LIVE: Serena Williams vs Maya Joint latest results and reaction after Centre Court thriller

Serena Williams was beaten on her Wimbledon return in a topsy-turvy three-set encounter with Maya Joint.

The seven-time Wimbledon champion, 44, was the last match on a packed Centre Court and provided those who stayed long into the evening with plenty of entertainment.

Williams responded from losing the first set to force a decider. She moved a break up in that third set, but Joint bounced back to secure a 6-3 6-7 6-3 victory, denying Williams a first SW19 win since 2019.

Britain’s No2 Katie Boulter lost to Tyra Caterina Grant, but the mood was lifted by victories for Katie Swan against Irina-Camelia Begu before Arthur Fery beat Bosnia’s Damir Dzhumhur.

A record 10 British players crashed out in the first round of the tournament on Monday.

Meanwhile, a string of celebrities have descended onto Centre Court to take in the action, with the likes of Radio 1’s Greg James, Mollie King, Stuart Broad, and Celia Imrie in attendance.

Serena press conference coming up

22:18 , Tom Place

The Standard’s Matt Verri will be attending Serena Williams’ post match press conference shortly - we will bring you the best lines here.

Williams 3-6 7-6 3-6 Joint

21:56 , Matt Verri

Williams right in the point and looking to go 0-30 up, but Joint’s deep forehand skids off the baseline and proves too tricky.

But 15-30 will do for Williams - return right at Joint’s toes.

Crowd getting excited, until an ace slightly quietens them down. 30-30. And Williams then nets a backhand return. Match point Joint.

Double fault! Joint is trying to take about three seconds between points here, hoping to rush before the nerves catch up. But that doesn’t help. Deuce.

Ace. Match point again.

And Joint takes this one! Williams’ return loops long. The comeback falls just short.

Williams 3-6 7-6 3-5* Joint

21:53 , Matt Verri

Huge ovation for Williams as she gets up for the changeover. Serving to stay in the match.

Very welcome couple of cheap points behind serve to start the game.

Not quite so comfortable now, Joint up to the net and puts the volley away. 40-30.

But there’s the hold. Williams has at least asked the question of Joint.

Williams 3-6 7-6 *2-5 Joint

21:48 , Matt Verri

Williams is running out of time to respond.

Joint forces her well behind the baseline and the error follows. Williams then goes long next point. 40-15.

Double fault from Joint slows her progress, but Williams then slices into the net.

Joint one game away.

Williams 3-6 7-6 2-4* Joint

21:45 , Matt Verri

Joint’s box up on their feet as she jogs over after the changeover. All except for one of them that is, who is staring down at his phone.

Looks up and starts applauding wildly just as everyone else is sitting down. Too late, sir.

Even he reacts on time to this shot, though. Joint with a perfect winner down the line. 0-30 and she is on the charge.

Double fault from Williams. Joint has three break points.

Needs just one, as Williams nets the backhand. What an anti-climax that game was.

Williams 3-6 7-6 *2-3 Joint

21:42 , Matt Verri

Good service game from Joint.

Much more in control, ace gets her to 40-15.

Williams with a very hopeful forehand, as though she had accepted that game was gone. It is now.

Williams 3-6 7-6 2-2* Joint

21:40 , Matt Verri

Joint shanks a forehand ten rows behind her. Couldn’t do that again if she tried. One man in the crowd enjoyed it - he stretched out over the masses to pluck the ball one-handed. Very happy with himself as he soaks in the applause.

There’s also some tennis going on. Joint gets to 30-30 but then hits it low into the net.

Williams should put the game to bed, but instead she’s screaming as soon as the ball leaves her racket. Knew that was flying long. Deuce.

Joint with a stunning return winner. Break point to get it back on serve.

And juuuust takes it! Forehand looped towards the baseline and it’s in! Williams can’t believe it.

Williams 3-6 7-6 *2-1 Joint

21:33 , Matt Verri

Williams tip-toes her way up to the net to put away the forehand. Movement has not always been great tonight but that was confident.

Joint with the unforced error to put more pressure on herself, to deuce we go. Every game feel likes a battle for the Australian.

Eases that with a lovely drop shot. Probably hasn’t used that enough to test any rust in Williams’ legs.

Back to baseline punches being thrown next point, Williams wins it. Deuce.

Joint maybe shouldn’t listen to me - tries the drop shot again and nets it. Williams has a break point. But she saves it, dominating the point.

Another break point coming. Joint hammers it long, Williams calls it out just in case the technology was on the fence.

Williams breaks! Joint should have put the forehand away but once more it’s long. Loose, loose finish to that game and she’s punished.

Williams 3-6 7-6 1-1* Joint

21:27 , Matt Verri

Almost two hours into this match but Williams is still looking pretty fresh.

Power hasn’t dwindled, she’s still swinging for the fences. Gets her 40-0 up in a hurry.

Joint hanging in. Stays in the point and eventually Williams goes for too much as she falls off balance. 40-30.

There’s the hold, first serve to the rescue. Williams with one of the loudest ‘come on’ shouts she has produced all night.

Williams 3-6 7-6 *0-1 Joint

21:22 , Matt Verri

Williams asks for a reply after the first point, convinced that Joint’s shot had been out. To no great surprise, the technology confirms that the technology was correct.

That didn’t go her way but the next two points do. 15-30 and Williams is straight on the front foot again.

Joint feeling the heat? Slaps a routine forehand into the net. Two break points for Williams!

First saved with a lovely shot down the line. And Williams then nets a forehand of her own to see the second go too. Deuce.

Great shot. Joint finds the line and she lands the first blow in the deciding set.

Williams 3-6 7-6 Joint

21:16 , Matt Verri

Extraordinary serving. 122mph down the line, Joint barely gets a racket on it. Williams leads 7-6. Set. Point.

WE’RE GOING TO A DECIDER!

Agonisingly tense rally, Joint blinks first! A little fist pump from Williams but she’s very calm as she marches to her chair.

Settle in!

Williams 3-6 6-6 Joint

21:14 , Matt Verri

Still on serve. Williams long with the return, Joint leads 4-3.

Level again, first serve thundered down out wide from Williams. 4-4.

And an ace out wide! Perfect timing for those two serves. Williams moves 5-4 up.

But Joint responds. Such clean hitting - brave going that big in this situation. Pays off, Williams worn down at the baseline. 5-5.

Who will have the first set point? Well it’s a match point. Williams with a poor return. 6-5 Joint.

Saved! Another first serve from Williams, and the forehand behind it. 6-6.

Williams 3-6 6-6 Joint

21:11 , Matt Verri

Joint with an immediate mini-break. Williams tentative moving up the court and it’s a poor forehand into the net.

But she makes up for it next point, back to brute force and it works. 1-1.

Chance for Williams to attack a second serve, but the return is long. 2-1 Joint.

First serve good enough for Williams to level it up at 2-2. And she then laces a forehand winner down the line. Leads 3-2.

Williams left frustrated again, goes long with the backhand. 3-3 at the changeover.

Williams 3-6 6-6 Joint

21:08 , Matt Verri

Centre Court crowd getting involved before this huge game. “Let’s go Serena, let’s go.” Support firmly behind her.

But Joint is ignoring it and races 30-0 up. All routine so far after the drama of much of this set.

Ace out wide, 40-0. And another one! What a game this is for Joint.

We’re going to a breaker.

Williams 3-6 6-5* Joint

21:05 , Matt Verri

Brilliant second serve from Williams, kicking up and cramping Joint for room. Advantage for the American.

Nope, back to deuce. Joint with the latest forehand winner, Williams doesn’t even more towards it. Mammoth game continues.

The 44-year-old continues to battle away. Flat backhand.

And she holds! First serve returns at the perfect time. Williams has guaranteed herself at least a tie-break.

Williams 3-6 *5-5 Joint

21:02 , Matt Verri

Double fault from Williams is not quite the start to the game she was looking for. Wow. Back-to-back doubles. Disastrous timing. 0-30.

Joint then drops a return right at Williams’ feet and she can’t respond. Three break points - this has got away from the American in a hurry.

Williams saves the first with a confident forehand winner. Joint then throws the kitchen sink at a return - wide. 30-40.

Williams need a first serve and she gets one. Joint doesn’t return it. Deuce. Huge effort from Williams to save those three break points.

Big miss. Joint has half the court open but she tries to find the line. Wide. Advantage Williams.

Back to deuce. Williams basically stopped thinking a shot was long but there’s no call. Nets her backhand and looks at the umpire confused. Not going to get any help.

Break point! Joint starting to dominate the rallies again, forcing the error.

Great defence. Williams scrambling around the baseline, stays in the point and Joint makes the mistake. Back to deuce.

Williams 3-6 *5-5 Joint

20:55 , Matt Verri

Bizarre second serve from Joint. Kicks off something well above Williams’ head and she can’t readjust in time.

Joint racing through this game, standing up to the pressure of the situation.

Williams then shanks a forehand that nearly threatens the roof. Don’t need the technology to call that one out.

Williams 3-6 5-4* Joint

20:52 , Matt Verri

Been a while since we’ve had a hold. What Williams would give for one now.

“Come on” shout echoes around Centre Court as he makes a good start to the game, but she follows it with a double fault. 15-15.

Solid couple of points gets it back on track, Joint starting to look a bit messier. 40-15.

And again - Australian with a routine forehand into the net. Williams holds.

Joint will serve to stay in the set!

Williams 3-6 *4-4 Joint

20:48 , Matt Verri

Another twist?

Double fault to kick things off from Joint. And backs it up with an ace, just to keep everyone on their toes. 15-15.

Great point from Williams, flat backhand and then up to the net to put away the volley. 15-30. This one still isn’t over.

Williams has a good look at a second serve to get herself two break points, but finds the net. Will be furious with that.

Even more so next point as she nets the backhand, sinking to the grass and shrieking in disgust. 40-30.

More like it. Power matched with accuracy this time, Joint scrambling and sending the ball sailing long. Deuce.

Break point! Joint off balance and not even close to making that forehand.

AND BREAKS! Williams with pretty much the first drop shot I can remember and it pays off. We’re back on serve again!

Williams 3-6 3-4* Joint

20:42 , Matt Verri

If Williams can hold here, Joint is going to be under all sorts of pressure in the next game.

That’s looking like a big if. Two dismissive forehand winners from Joint and she’s sensing blood at 0-30.

Three break points now. Williams just wide and she’s got to dig herself out of a huge point. This has been a brilliant response from Joint to being broken.

Big first serve out wide doesn’t come back. But Joint takes the second break point as Williams goes long again.

Well... that was fun while it lasted.

Williams 3-6 *3-3 Joint

20:40 , Matt Verri

Williams continues to get looks in Joint’s service games.

Much better movement up to the net and she puts away the volley. 15-30 and she has to start making these positions count.

Not much she could do there. Joint fearless again with the flat groundstrokes and just grinds Williams down. 30-30.

Some rally! Both landing punches from the baseline, brutal exchange - again Joint is better equipped to tough it out.

That doesn’t help her, though. Double fault, deuce. Williams slapping her thigh, trying to get herself going.

SHOT! Perfect crosscourt forehand clips the line, break point Williams. And Centre Court is as loud as it’s been probably since Williams walked out.

It gets even louder now - Williams breaks back! Forehand hammered past Joint and Williams swivels in celebration.

Game on.

Williams 3-6 2-3* Joint

20:33 , Matt Verri

Service games have much easier for Williams. Couple of cheap points and she’s 30-0 up in no time.

But the radar again is off with the forehand going long. Up to 20 unforced errors now.

Williams gets lucky next point. Drop shot was not a good one but Joint doesn’t clear the net.

Ace thundered down to seal the hold.

Williams 3-6 *1-3 Joint

20:30 , Matt Verri

Lots of encouragement from Williams’ box as she forces the error to get to 15-30 on the Joint serve.

And it’s two break points! This has been a good ten-minute spell for Williams.

She’ll have a second serve to attack... slaps it into the net. One break point down, one to go. That goes to - timely ace from Joint. Deuce.

Huge hold. Williams goes for too much and it’s two unforced errors to get Joint out of trouble.

Williams 3-6 1-2* Joint

20:25 , Matt Verri

Much better game for Williams and she needs it.

Two cheap points behind serve gets her in control of it and the hold to love is sealed with an ace.

Keeps herself in this match.

Williams 3-6 *0-2 Joint

20:22 , Matt Verri

Williams needs something to flip the momentum. A tame backhand into the net isn’t it.

The American tries to land a body blow on Joint but the 20-year-old is not having it. Williams getting louder and louder, going bigger and bigger, but Joint is matching it... and more. 40-0.

Williams continuing with the heavy artillery and it gets her back to deuce. Perfect backhand return crosscourt gets the crowd going again.

Now then... Joint goes long. Williams with a break point to get it back on serve. Williams eyes up the forehand winner - nets it. Deuce.

Williams really is emptying the tank, every shot feels like the kitchen sink. Joint doing a good job of neutralising it, though.

Backhand wrong-foots Williams and that’s a crucial hold.

Williams 3-6 0-1* Joint

20:16 , Matt Verri

Bit of frustration in that one. Williams leathers the overhead and it has the front row of the Royal Box ducking for cover. Good to keep checking they’re awake.

Ace puts her in control of the game but Joint gets it back to deuce. Deep groundstrokes have Williams hanging on in the point and eventually the error is forced.

Shot. Joint with another couple of superb forehands and she earns a break point.

And that is just too good. Flat backhand down the line - Joint a set and a break up.

Williams 3-6 Joint

20:10 , Matt Verri

Up goes the intensity. Lovely crosscourt winner from Williams and another shriek.

Tries to keep Joint waiting next point as she turns her back and takes a few seconds - Joint responds with an ace.

Joint nets a backhand, 30-30 and two massive points coming up now.

Set point. Williams frames the forehand wide.

Saved! Joint got a bit excited there and sends her forehand well beyond the baseline. Deuce.

Good first serve from the Australian earns herself a second set point.

Takes it! Joint wins the opening set 6-3. Williams is going to have to do it the hard way.

Williams 3-5* Joint

20:06 , Matt Verri

Joint with a great return and Williams is then motionless as she watches a backhand winner down the line. 15-30, chance for Joint.

Australian frustrated with herself as she sends the next return long - had a good look at that.

Got a break point here, though. Williams tries the forehand down the line but missed that by a decent distance.

First serve gets her out of trouble and a big roar to go with it. That feels familiar.

But Joint will have another chance. This one she takes! Williams nets a backhand and Joint has the break - she will serve for the set.

Williams *3-4 Joint

20:00 , Matt Verri

It’s all-out attack from Williams in the return games, particularly when she gets a look at a second serve.

Joint matching that power but this time Williams does get the better of a longer rally, making the crosscourt pass. Crowd loved that.

Williams tries another massive backhand, this time it lands just beyond the baseline. Joint holds to 30.

Williams 3-3* Joint

19:56 , Matt Verri

This serve is still such a weapon for Williams. Getting plenty of free points behind it.

She needs to try and keep these points shorter, does so with the flat forehand behind the first serve.

And that’s why - next point is a gruelling rally, Williams worked around the court before Joint hammers a forehand winner down the line.

Ace moves Williams level again.

Williams *2-3 Joint

19:53 , Matt Verri

First sniff of an opportunity for either player on serve.

Deep forehand from Williams forces the error and there’s a slight opening at 15-30.

More than that now - double fault and it’s two break points!

First one goes, Williams sending an off-balance backhand low into the net. And so does the second, Joint dispatching a forehand winner. Deuce.

Turning into a big game - Joint follows a winner with a loose forehand. Back to deuce,

Big game, big hold. Joint does really well there under pressure.

Williams 2-2* Joint

19:47 , Matt Verri

First ace of the match from Williams. You’d get decent odds on it being the last.

She’s settled right into rhythm on serve. Latest one is up at 123mph.

Joint then wins her first point on the Williams serve, but she then sends a forehand long to let Williams off the hook.

Still on serve.

Williams *1-2 Joint

19:42 , Matt Verri

Anything you can do...

Williams continues to go big on the groundstrokes but Joint is right there with her. Flattening it out from the back of the court and going punch for punch.

Another bruising rally, eventually Williams blinks first and pulls the crosscourt backhand wide.

American then misfires with the return. Joint with a routine hold.

Williams 1-1* Joint

19:40 , Matt Verri

Perfect lob from Williams to start the game. Then a first serve down the T proves too good. 30-0.

Feels like we’re picking up from where we left off a few years ago - Williams dominant behind her serve.

Another first serve doesn’t come back and Williams races to a hold to love. Confident start.

Williams *0-1 Joint

19:37 , Matt Verri

Early statement. Joint with a tame second serve and it is hammered back at her by Williams. Joint never getting that back.

First look of Williams moving up to the next point - gets there in plenty of time but the volley flies well out.

Williams trying to be aggressive at every opportunity, couple of unforced errors. To be expected.

Joint with a deep backhand, wraps up a hold to 30.

Here we go...

19:28 , Matt Verri

Massive roar as the players walk out.

And another one as there’s a shout of ‘Let’s go Serena’ from someone high up in the stands.

Joint is taking on about 15,000 people tonight.

Huge evening in store

19:20 , Matt Verri

It was already loud on Centre Court when the announcer confirmed Williams was next up, big cheers from the crowd.

And it’s going to get even louder because the roof has now been closed. This will be a cauldron, with nearly everyone in here roaring on Williams.

Settle in!

Court 1 spectators enjoying the show

Can Stan Wawrinka and Matteo Berrettini just play each every day for the next fortnight?

Definitely not, considering their injury problems, but they are treating all those on Court 1 right now.

No breaks so far but plenty of lovely tennis. Wawrinka took the first set tie-break and it’s locked at 4-4 in the second.

Williams explains singles decision

18:44 , Matt Verri

Serena Williams made a late decision to play singles at Wimbledon, with tournament organisers keeping a wildcard back for her.

What ultimately made up her mind?

“I thought not every day Wimbledon holds a wildcard for someone,” Williams said.

“I can name probably like a handful of people. I happened to be one of those people. I thought I should really take this opportunity.

“Who knows if I'll ever make it here again. This could be it.

“I was like, ‘what's wrong with me, Serena? What are you thinking? Are you nuts?’

“People live to be an athlete. I have this great opportunity to showcase what I do, what I do best, I suppose.

I think ultimately I was like that is pretty cool, so I should do it.”

Fery: I expected Dzumhur meltdown

17:55 , Matt Verri

Arthur Fery says he was not surprised by Damir Dzumhur’s angry outburst during their first-round match this afternoon.

Fery won in four sets to become the first British man to win at Wimbledon this year.

The turning point was a let call on Dzumhur’s serve that was not called, leaving the Bosnian furious both with the umpire and Fery.

The Briton put in earplugs at one stage to block out Dzumhur’s tirade and he went on to win 17 of the next 20 games.

“It was expected, to be honest. He does that with everyone,” Fery said.

“I was just ready for it before the match. It's a let, it's a let for everyone. It's not just a let for him. Whether the point carries on or not, it's the same for both of us.

“He knows he's in the wrong when he does these things. I think deep down he knows he's in the wrong.”

When will Williams vs Joint start?

17:42 , Matt Verri

As I think we all know by now, Serena Williams is taking on Maya Joint in the final match on Centre Court.

It’s not quite time for that yet.

Alexander Zverev has dropped the second set against Alexander Blockx, who has levelled the match up. at one set each.

Could be a late night at Wimbledon...

Britain’s Toby Samuel is embroiled in a fifth set with 15th seed Jacob Mensik of the Czech Republic.

Battle of the Alexanders

Alexander Blockx is facing off against Alexander Zverev at Centre Court.

As it stands, Germany’s Zverev has won the first set, which should come as no surprise. Zverev is the current world no.3 and recently won his first major title at the 2026 French Open.

It won’t be an easy contest though as Alexander Blockx is currently the world no.36 and the no.1 singles player from Belgium.

The Standard’s Matt Verri reports live from Wimbledon:

That's the biggest shock we've had so far - Ben Shelton has been sent packing! The fourth seed reached the quarter-finals here last year and earlier this month won the title in Stuttgart on grass. But he has just lost an epic five-set encounter with Otto Virtanen, who will play Arthur Fery in the second round.

Nobody could have predicted a loss for defending title champion Swiatek, but she’s looking shakey on Centre Court this afternoon.

Swiatek needs to up her game if she is to progress in this Wimbledon Championship.

We’re at the fourth break point for Taylor Townsend.

The scores on the doors are Townsend 1-6 6-2 0-0 Swiatek.

Meanwhile, good news for Britain as Arthur Fery is leading in the fourth set and Fearnley looks to have made a recovery against Michelson.

Fritz wraps up win on Court 1

Game, set, and match for Fritz on Court 1.

The world no.4 in men’s singles has stormed through the first round at Wimbledon, defeating Dusac Lajovic.

Things might have looked different if he was facing Draper, but he’s comfortably through to the second round after winning 6-3 6-4 6-3 in under two hours.

Townsend fighting back

14:52 , Niva Yadav

Never underestimate Taylor Townsend. The American is giving Polish reigning Wimbledon champion a run for her money as she wins the second set.

The pair are now level as they battle it out on Centre Court. Swiatek has suffered with form in 2026, but she looks ready to defend her title.

Naomi Osaka has been spotted in the stands backing her pal Townsend on Tuesday afternoon.

Brit Arthur Fery suffers nosebleed

14:40 , Niva Yadav

British no.3 Arthur Fery took a medical timeout for a nosebleed, but after a short interlude it looks like he is back on the court.

He won his first Grand Slam match in the first round of Wimbledon last year, but was eliminated in the second round.

A wildcard entry this year, he’ll be hoping he’s the second Brit to progress to round two. As it stands, he’s neck-in-neck with Bosnian opponent Dzhumhur.

Kerfuffle on Court 16

14:40 , Niva Yadav

There appears to be a kerfuffle on Court 16 where Britain’s Arthur Fery is facing Bosnia’s Damir Dzhumhur.

The Bosnian, who ranks world no.23, was pictured speaking with the match referee after a decision he didn’t agree with.

On his return to the court, he was greeted with an uproar of boos from spectators, who were backing the Brit.

Jack Pinnington Jones adds another loss

Britain’s Jack Pinnington Jones’ match against Brandon Nakashima resumed on Court 18.

But the Briton fell short, losing all three sets to hand the match to the American.

The only Brit to have succeeded in the first round so far is Katie Swan - a bleak story for Britain.

Swiatek begins title defence

14:25 , Niva Yadav

Iga Swiatek has begun her title defence as she plays America’s Taylor Townsend.

Swiatek has won the first set, but the former US no.1 in women’s doubles will put up a fight and looks to be breaking through.

Townsend will also be playing in the doubles on Thursday, buddying up with Czech star Katerina Siniakova.

Swiatek has never played head-to-head against Serena Williams, but the pair could meet in a third-round showdown if they both progress as planned.

Any luck for Jacob Fearnley?

14:15 , Niva Yadav

Jacob Fearnley, another one of Draper’s pals, looks to be following the trajectory of his fellow Britons.

He’s trailing behind US opponent Alex Michelsen, 6-3 6-4.

A lose here would make him the thirteenth British player to make a first round exit at Wimbledon.

British bloodbath at Wimbledon: Who's left in the running?

13:20 , Niva Yadav

Following withdrawals from Jack Draper and Emma Raducanu, the British players left on the court have struggled to produce a positive result.

On day one, all 10 British players lost out and failed to progress to round two. Britain’s no.2 Katie Boulter made it 11 on day two.

So, who is left for Great Britain at Wimbledon?

The Standard’s senior sports editor Alex Young reports....

What British players are left at Wimbledon?

A disappointing display from Boulter

13:10 , Niva Yadav

Britain’s no.2 Katie Boulter struggled up against 18-year-old Tyra Catarina Grant, losing 4-6 2-6 in little over an hour.

Many would have expected her to do better, especially given this was the first time in nine years that she has lost in the first round of Wimbledon.

You can read The Standard’s Matt Verri’s report here.

Who is Katie Swan?

12:50 , Niva Yadav

Katie Swan was a wildcard entry at this year’s Championships and she has never competed in a Grand Slam outside of Wimbledon.

But Swan’s rapid rise to rank inside the world’s top 300 has been remarkable. After suffering a series of injuries in 2024, she’s since scooped up four ITF titles, ending the year as world number 275.

She lost out in the first round of Wimbledon last year, so will be pleased with her victory today.

Katie Boulter has just been eliminated by 18-year-old Tyra Caterina Grant, but good news for Katie Swan, who has defeated Romania’s Begu to progress to round two of the Championships.

A win for Katie Swan!

12:33 , Niva Yadav

Matt Verri reports live from Wimbledon:

At the 12th time of asking, a British win! Katie Swan needed five match points but she finally gets over the line, beating Irina-Camelia Begu. That's a really good win. She will face either Madison Keys or Kayla Day in the second round. That all-American clash is being played now and Keys has lost the first set.

Boulter out, but hope yet for Katie Swan

12:30 , Niva Yadav

Boulter may have been defeated by Tyra Caterina Grant of Italy, but there is hope yet for Great Britain.

Katie Swan looks to be closing in on Irina-Camelia Begu on Romania on Court 16. Swan is a wildcard entry and has never qualified for a Grand Slam outside of Wimbledon.

Boulter is out

12:18 , Niva Yadav

Matt Verri reports live from Wimbledon:

Boulter is out. Grant, the 18-year-old qualifier, played well but that is such a disappointing performance from the British No2. Unsurprisingly she can't get off the court quick enough. Make that 11 defeats from 11 for the Brits so far at Wimbledon.

More struggles for British players

11:42 , Niva Yadav

The Standard’s Matt Verri reports live from Wimbledon:

Well... we've picked up where we left off yesterday. More struggles for the British players. Boulter loses the first set 6-4 and she's got it all to do now. It was a fairly tight set, but Boulter had far too many doubles faults in her opening games and it has proved costly.

Court 3 is packed this morning as Boulter walks out to a big ovation. After a horrendous opening day for the Brits, a lot is riding on Boulter lifting the mood against the world number 172. Sun is starting to break through the clouds, perfect conditions. Hopefully we get some tennis to match it.

Why are there so many injuries at Wimbledon?

10:40 , Niva Yadav

Several big names are missing out on their chance at The Championships due to injury, including seven-time champion Carlos Alcaraz, and British hopefuls Jack Draper and Emma Radacanu.

It has raised the question as to why there are so many injuries.

Novak Djokovic called for tournament formats and the calendar to be addressed after his opening win on Centre Court on Monday.

The 24-time Grand Slam winner said: "I think tennis really needs a reset of some kind on a bigger level,

"I think our tours are not functioning well at all. There are a lot of things happening backstage, meetings, and relationships are not going in the right direction.

"There will always be Grand Slams - the most important tournaments we have in our sport.

"But the tournaments have to look at the format, the rules, the calendar. There's a lot of complaints."

Despite gallant efforts from the likes of Harriet Dart, Felix Gill, and Max Basing, a record ten Britons were eliminated in the first round of the Championships.

The draws for Great Britain were especially tough and to add insult to injury, Emma Radacanu and Jack Draper were both forced to withdraw from the competition following injuries.

Everything you need to know about Serena Williams' comeback

09:41 , Niva Yadav

As Serena Williams steps back onto Centre Court just after 4pm today, here’s what you need to know about her legendary comeback.

  • This is Serena’s first singles match in nearly four years
  • She made her Wimbledon debut at the age of 16 and is still playing on Centre Court at the age of 44
  • She has won seven Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon
  • Serena will also be playing in the doubles alongside sister Venus

It’s also worth noting that since Serena played her last Grand Slam, there have been numerous frontrunners, including Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Jessica Pegula.

She’s never played Gauff or Swiatek, so it will be interesting to see how she fares against the incoming talent.
