Wimbledon 2024: World No1 Iga Swiatek stunned by Yulia Putintseva as Ons Jabeur also crashes out

World No1 Iga Swiatek has been knocked out of Wimbledon in the third round, beaten by Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan.

Swiatek came into the match on the back of 21 straight victories but lost 6-3, 1-6, 2-6 to the unseeded Kazakh in a major shock on Court One.

Swiatek took the first set but then won just three games across the final two as it turned into a nightmare evening at SW19 for the Pole.

Putintseva, who had already knocked out 2018 Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber in the first round, will now face 13th seed Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia in the fourth round on Monday.

“It feels really great”, Putintseva said in her on-court interview after the match.

“I was trying to entertain you more and more with my shots.”

Meanwhile, last year’s finalist Ons Jabeur, was beaten on Centre Court in three sets by Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, 6-1 7-6. Svitolina now faces Wang Xinyu, who earlier knocked out British No2 Harriet Dart in three sets on Court 2.

Elena Rybakina, Wimbledon champion in 2022, is now favourite to win a second title at SW19, with Coco Gauff and Emma Raducanu potentially the biggest obstacles.

Cameron Norrie lost in straight sets, 4-6, 4-6, 6-7 to fourth seed Alexander Zverev earlier on Saturday afternoon, ending the British interest in the men’s singles.
