Willie Miller insists Ryan Porteous is playing at a level below his Scotland colleagues despite the Hibs defender's display against Ukraine.
The former Scotland defender was reflecting on Scotland's Ukraine clash in Poland on Tuesday. Steve Clarke 's men battled for a draw to secure their place at the top of Nations League Group B1. But the national side were forced to do so without a number of key stars as injuries plagued the camp including defender Scott McKenna. And to add to concerns Scott McTominay was unavailable after one too many yellow cards in the competition.
It meant Porteous was selected for his senior debut, starting alongside Jack Hendry in the heart of the Scotland defence. The Hibs stopper impressed on the international stage, but Miller reckons the defender is not quite playing at a level on par with his fellow Scotland teammates. The Aberdeen legend drew comparisons between Lee Johnson's side and the likes of Rangers, Celtic and Aston Villa as he looked at Clarke's selection.
He told BBC Sportsound: "They're all playing at a decent level. It's not as if you're delving into lower leagues to bring these players in. Probably Ryan Porteous is one playing with Hibs. No disrespect to Hibs, I don't want them giving me pelters!
"You look at the rest of them and they're all playing for Rangers, Celtic or in the Premier League. The manager has got a great pool to pick from. It's taken time, if you go back three or four years, the John McGinns, the Ryan Frasers were just beginning to emerge.
"And Jack Hendry, he's had some bad press at times, but he's shown that he's got quite considerable quality. You've also got Aaron Hickey coming through and looking like he's been there for years. The squad is probably looking like the strongest squad for a long, long time."
