Former Scots ref Des Roache believes the time has come for Willie Collum to QUIT refereeing after he found himself at the centre of yet another controversial performance at Ibrox at the weekend.
Ex-whistler Roache insists Collum made three errors in the Rangers vs St Johnstone clash and reckons the time might have come for the 44-year-old – who first officiated a match almost two decades ago – to hang up his whistle.
Roache, speaking to Grosvenor Sport, said of Collum: “If it was me, I would take myself out of the equation. His best days are behind him. If I was making as many highlighted errors, I would take myself out of the limelight.” There were three big calls in the Rangers clash with St Johnstone conceding a penalty for handball, Nicky Clark sent off for the visitors but Ryan Jack surviving a possible red card after a VAR check for a lunge.
Roache added: “The penalty call was wrong in my view. James Brown couldn’t possibly get out of the way when the ball hit his arm. It was never a red card when Nicky Clark challenged Ryan Jack – and Jack should have been sent off for his challenge on Adam Montgomery. So there were three mistakes.
“Everyone can have a bad day at the office – a player or a referee – but when you continue to have bad days then what happens? Do the SFA continue to appoint him? It is time he’s held accountable, and that’s up to the SFA and the referee’s committee. They have to decide what games he gets now.”
