Will Smith's son, Jaden, claims his mother Jada Pinkett Smith, 51, introduced him and the rest of his family to psychedelic drugs. Speaking at a Psychedelic Science conference in Colorado, US, last week, the rapper and actor said Jada 'took the first step' to bringing the hallucinogenic into their lives.
The 24-year-old added: "I think it was my mom, actually, that was really the first one to make that step for the family. It was just her for a really, really long time and then eventually it just trickled and evolved, and everybody found it in their own ways."
He went on to discuss how much the psychedelics have aided in developing a stronger and more emotional bond with his younger sister, Willow, and older half brother, Trey. "Siblings can argue so much and fight so much, and lord knows me and my siblings have done so much of that in the past," he said.
"But the level of love and empathy that I can feel for them inside of the [psychedelic] experiences and outside of the experiences has been something that’s profound and beautiful." Although psychedelic drugs are still illegal across much of the US, Colorado and Oregon have partially legalised them.
In Colorado, magic mushrooms are legal for recreational use. According to Talk To Frank, 'shrooms' or 'magic mushrooms' grow in the wild and can be swallowed or made into tea. In the UK, they are a Class A drug, which means it's illegal to have for yourself, give away or sell.
In an episode of Red Table Talk back in November 2021, Jada opened up about her experience with psychedelics. "I struggled with depression for so long," she admitted.
"And the thing about the plant medicine is it helps you feel better but also solves the problems of how you got there in the first place." She went on to say how prospective users should speak to a professional before diving in themselves.
"You have to really wanna do it, this is not for play," she said. "You have to be willing to confront some hard stuff. It is very healing and it has changed my life."
During the show, Jaden also spoke to his mum about the first time he tried psychedelic drugs, out of "curiosity". He recalled having an "experience where I learned what ego was for the first time."
He explained: "It was always in my head talking, telling me what I was and what I wasn’t and for the first time I had like an ego dissolution where I was like, ‘That was the moment that really changed me.’"
Jada Pinkett Smith has been approached for comment.
