Will Smith's mum has admitted she was shocked over his actions at the Oscars.
Carolyn Smith said she has never seen her son act the way he did when he slapped Chris Rock across the face over a bald joke he made about the star's wife Jada.
She told 6abc : "He is a very even, people person. That's the first time I've ever seen him go off. First time in his lifetime... I've never seen him do that."
She was chatting to the Philadelphia news station about her famous son's first ever Oscars win and the controversial moment that came before it.
Will took to the stage on Sunday night to accept the Best Actor gong for his leading role in King Richard.
But not long before that, he had stormed the stage at the prestigious event to slap comedian Chris Rock across the face.
Chris had joked to Will's actress wife Jada that he couldn't wait to see her in GI Jane 2 - referencing how Demi Moore famously shaved her head for the role.
Jada, who has alopecia, appeared to be upset about the comment and Will stormed to the stage before slapping Chris in front of a room full of shocked A-listers.
Will has since issued a full apology to Chris, saying he was "out of line".
He said in a statement: "Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable.
"Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.
"I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness."
He added: "I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world.
"I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us.
"I am a work in progress. Sincerely, Will."
Reacting to his awards win, his mum Carolyn spoke of her pride, telling her local news station: "I know how he works, how hard he works...I've been waiting and waiting and waiting. When I heard the name, I was just, 'Yes!'"
Despite the events of the night, Will's loved ones remain proud of him for all he's achieved after years of hard work.
"I am proud of him being him," Carolyn added.
And his sister Ellen said: "I've had conversations with him, and it like really kind of broke my heart listening to the things he's said he had to go through to get to where he is."
