Will Smith hits Chris Rock at the Oscars after comedian makes joke about his wife Jada

Will Smith caused uproar overnight on Sunday as he hit Chris Rock on stage at the Oscars, telling him to “keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth.”

In a moment watched by millions of people all over the world and a live audience including huge stars like Nicole Kidman, Lady Gaga and Andrew Garfield, King Richard leading man Will took aim at comedian Chris as cameras rolled.

The comment which appeared to trigger Will’s Oscars stage invasion was when Chris, who was there to present the award for documentary feature, remarked his wife Jada, who was sitting next to him, “couldn’t wait for GI Jane 2.”

He was referencing the 90s film that Demi Moore famously shaved her head to play the lead in.

Moments later, Will got out of his seat, just metres from where Chris was standing on the podium and slapped him before going back to his seat and looking shaken up as he then shouted twice: “Keep my wife’s name out of your f**king mouth.”

Twitter went into overdrive as the unexpected incident played out with Piers Morgan one of the many celebs to react.

The former Good Morning Britain host reacted: “What just happened between Chris Rock & Will Smith????? That looked real. He swiftly followed that up by adding: “ It was real. Just seen the uncensored footage.

"Will Smith hit Chris Rock for cracking a GI Jane joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith (who suffers from alopecia) - then twice screamed 'keep my wife's name out of your f**king mouth' at him. Ugliest moment in Oscars history.”

Will went into win Best Actor for King Richard minutes later and apologised for the incident in his acceptance speech, saying: “I want to apologise to the Academy, I want to apologise to all my fellow nominees.”
