After what she dubbed the "longest job interview in history" Liz Truss won the Tory leadership contest becoming the new Prime Minster yesterday. The former Foreign Secretary beat Rishi Sunak with 57 per cent of the vote and thanked 'her friend' Boris Johnson in her victory speech.
Truss is expected to be handed the keys to Number 10 Downing Street today, at which point she faces the task of navigating Britain through the cost of living crisis as soaring energy bills threaten to wipe out businesses, force schools to cut anything considered non-essential and shed staff.
Truss became the Conservatives’ fourth leader in just over six years and Queen Elizabeth’s 15th Prime Minister - the third woman to hold the job. Boris Johnson decided to step down and resign as Tory party leader earlier this summer, after facing a backlash over breaking lockdown rules with a number of gatherings inside Number 10 at the height of the Covid-19 outbreak.
