Following the Indianapolis Colts’ Week 7 matchup with Miami, linebacker Jaylon Carlies was placed on injured reserve with a fibula/shoulder injury.
Earlier this week, he was designated to return to practice. This then opened up a 21-day window for Carlies to be activated and added back to the 53-man roster. He can be activated at any time–and once he is, he is able to play on Sundays–but it’s all dependent upon his health.
Carlies was a full participant for all three days of practice this week and was initially listed as questionable on the team’s final injury report.
Jaylon Carlies injury update
After Carlies was originally listed as questionable on Friday, the team announced that he had been downgraded to out on Saturday and will remain on injured reserve for the time being.
What it means for Colts vs. Broncos
When healthy, Carlies had been the Colts third linebacker this season, seeing playing time when the defense was lined up in it’s base 4-3 look, which requires three linebackers to be on the field.
As a former college safety, Carlies brings added coverage ability to the position, as evidenced by the just 6.6 yards per catch he is allowing. Carlies has also shown to be a reliable tackler as well.
In Carlies’ absence, Grant Stuard has filled that third linebacker role when the Colts are in their base defense.
This season, Stuard has made 27 of his 30 tackle attempts, is allowing just 6.3 yards per catch in coverage with a catch rate of 73.3 percent.
