Will Cornell University face action over Jane Doe gang rape case revelations?

Will Cornell University face action over Jane Doe gang rape case revelations? The question has gained attention after new details from a civil lawsuit and investigative records brought the 2024 allegations back onto focus. Jane Doe alleges that seven Chi Phi fraternity members sexually assaulted her. Cornell conducted a Title IX process and imposed sanctions on several students, while the fraternity chapter was closed. No criminal charges were filed at the time. The Tompkins County District Attorney has now reopened the criminal investigation, and New York attorney general Letitia James has been appointed special prosecutor.

Will Cornell University face action over Jane Doe gang rape case revelations?

Whether Cornell could face institutional or legal scrutiny over how it handled the case remains to be seen in the upcoming days. Cornell has said it conducted an investigation and hearing process over several months. According to the university, two students were expelled, two were suspended for at least two semesters, one had graduated before punishment could be imposed and two were found not responsible for sexual misconduct. The Chi Phi chapter was closed in 2024 and barred from campus.

The university has already agreed for an external review of its handling of the gang rape case. New York authorities have separately reopened the criminal investigation. Governor Kathy Hochul appointed attorney general Letitia James as special prosecutor on October 2, giving the renewed criminal inquiry to a state-level prosecutor.

Why students are demanding further action?

More than 100 Cornell students, alumni, parents and professors attended a student government meeting where speakers criticised the university's approach. Students called for stronger action against the accused.

Adriana Vink, a Student Assembly member who helped organise a campus town hall, said students wanted Cornell to address sexual violence and what they described as failures in the administration's response. She also called for remaining fraternity members allegedly involved to be removed from campus and for degrees of graduates allegedly involved to be revoked.

Cornell's 2025 sexual misconduct survey found that 35% of responding undergraduate women reported nonconsensual sexual contact during their time at Cornell, compared with 23% in 2023.

What happens next in the Jane Doe case?

The reopened criminal investigation could lead to a grand jury review. It does not mean criminal charges have been filed against the accused. Lawyers for some of the accused have already denied the allegations.

Cornell also created a Presidential Task Force on Campus Sexual Assault in 2025. Its recommendations were endorsed in 2026 and include prevention measures, clearer reporting options, training and institutional accountability.
