Wilko shoppers rush to buy £2.50 kitchen item that could cut £100s off energy bills

With energy prices on the rise, people up and down the country are looking for ways to keep their usage as low as possible, and in many cases changing how they carry out everyday tasks. This of course includes washing up, with a number of us keen to cut back on how much hot water we use.

With this in mind, thrifty shoppers have applauded a new washing-up liquid formula released by Fairy, which allows you to wash your dirty dishes in cold water. The label reads, 'New. Brilliant in cold. Save energy', and some believe it could save them £100s a year in heating bills.

Taking to the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group, a savvy bargain hunter shared a pic of a new Christmas version of the formula, which is said to smell like 'wild berry'.

She wrote: "Fairy has brought out a new liquid that can be used in cool water to save people running the hot tap with the extreme energy prices …. I suppose every little helps."

As previously reported by the Manchester Evening News, shoppers can buy the non-festive scented version of Fairy's cold water washing-up liquid in Wilko stores. Prices start at £2.50, while an 870ml bottle of the Christmassy formula can be found in B&M for £2.79, or in Tesco for £3.

Some weren't too sure about washing their plates in cold water, which they feared wouldn't be too comfortable, while others felt saddened that such measures were needed in the first place. A number of group members however were keen to give it a try.

One person approved: "It's a great idea! Just sad times that energy costs so much people have to wash in cold water these days to save a little off their bills."

Another commented: "Wow, thank you for sharing this. I have two young babies so often forget to wash up leaving the water to go cold. Will definitely be trying a bottle of this! Every little helps."

A Fairy spokesperson has made the following statement: "Fairy’s upgraded formula delivers a fast activating clean from start to finish, designed to clean quickly even in cooler water temperatures.

"With Fairy’s new formula, you can wash in cooler temperatures and still get a brilliant clean."

  • An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated Fairy's cold water washing-up liquid could be purchased from Wilko stores for 25p. It is actually £2.50.
