Wildfires continue to burn across Kentucky

Kentucky is under a Red Flag fire warning due to drought conditions fueling wildfires across the commonwealth. There are currently around 50 active wildfires in 28 counties. More than 30 of those fires are still burning but are contained.

The two largest fires are in Estill County. Smoke from the fires has been blown over much of central Kentucky. Donnie Watson is the Estill County Judge Executive. He said that has been a problem locally too.

“All the smoke, it filters in through houses, it hinders people’s sleep and people’s that got health problems, breathing problems it complicates those matters.”

He said the worst of the damage has not been to personal property.

“No homes were lost, no, of course we’ve had a lot damage to the forest, a lot of wildlife, and I hate that, so bad.”

Watson declared a state of emergency to help deal with the fires there. More than thirty of the fires across Kentucky are still burning but are contained.

Some relief is on the way, as rain is expected today and tomorrow across much of eastern Kentucky. Many central and eastern Kentucky counties has enacted burn bans to help prevent more fires from appearing.
