A Wigan-based animal charity who cares for abandoned greyhounds has won a prestigious award that will see the animals in their care fed for an entire year. The prize comes as a lifeline for the charity, covering one of their largest overheads amid the cost of living crisis.
Of the six charities nominated for the Burns Charity of the Year Award, the pet food company selected Makants Greyhound Rescue, in Mort Lane, Tyldesley, as the worthy winners.
The prize - tailored to the needs of the charity - will see Makants Greyhound Rescue receive ongoing support from the pet food company, including meeting all feeding needs for their four-legged residents for an entire year.

Makants Greyhound Rescue is a self-funded, independent charity who rescue, rehabilitate and rehome retired and injured greyhounds who have been used for racing
Formed in December 2013, they can have up to 21 greyhounds in their kennels at any given time, and during their nine years of operation, have successfully rehomed just under 600 ex-racing greyhounds.
The founder of Makants Greyhound Rescue, Siobhan Hoppley said: “Being awarded the Burns Charity of the Year Award for outstanding achievement is a great honour. To be recognised for the work we do, and to have a supportive partnership with a company such as Burns Pet Nutrition, can only be hugely beneficial. Having all our feeding needs met for a year is especially very welcome in these economically challenging times.
“We will be secure in the knowledge that our greyhounds will thrive in our care before ultimately finding their forever homes. We very much look forward to working with Burns Pet Nutrition over the coming year and, with their support, we believe we can help even more greyhounds into homes”.
The charity also takes their greyhounds on visits to care homes for older people and to schools and youth groups such as Cubs, attending many community events such as Christmas light 'switch ons' and other charity events.
Everyone connected with the rescue is a volunteer and many have been with the charity since the rescue centre was founded. As well as covering mealtime costs, Burns’ prize will also include staff training, dog training and all the food for rehoming packs.
The award scheme run by Burns Pet Nutrition has been recognising and rewarding the achievements of animal welfare organisations throughout the UK since 2015. Founder John Burns hopes the prize will be of great support to Makants throughout the year.
He said: “Myself and the Burns Pet Nutrition team are extremely passionate about supporting and giving back to the community in any way, shape or form possible, and the same goes for charities in need of the support they aren’t currently receiving. We are looking forward to working with Makants Greyhound Rescue throughout 2022 and, hopefully, they will feel the benefit of the support Burns Pet Nutrition can offer”.
