On a vibrant Monday evening in Mérida, the broad Plaza Grande pulsates with life as hundreds of dancers, resplendent in traditional attire, fill the streets. Women don intricately embroidered dresses adorned with colourful floral patterns, while men cut smart figures in white guayaberas and trousers, complemented by wide-brimmed hats.
Their tap dances and twirls culminate in a spectacular fireworks display, illuminating the horizon above the vast Mexican flag that gently unfurls in the square, flanked by historic buildings such as the San Ildefonso Cathedral, standing on the site of a Mayan temple.
