Anthony Gordon is expected to miss Newcastle United’s Premier League clash with Arsenal this weekend after missing training with a hip injury.
The winger was absent for last weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth, which left the Magpies languishing in 14th after three straight defeats.
Eddie Howe could do with one of his star players being available, but could we have seen the last of Gordon in a Newcastle shirt?
Gordon set for Bayern move
There is increasing speculation that Bayern Munich will make a move for Gordon in the summer transfer window.
The England international will also be keen to ensure he is fully fit for the World Cup, now less than two months away.
The winger is likely to be reluctant to aggravate the hip injury which kept him sidelined last weekend.
With a potential move lined up and a World Cup on the horizon, risking a recurrence of his injury would be illogical, especially given Newcastle now have nothing to play for.
Howe’s side have endured a difficult season, and will no longer have the carrot of European football to entice key players to stay should they pursue an exit.
And Gordon will certainly want to play in the Champions League having excelled in the competition this season: he netted 10 goals in 12 appearances, a total bettered only by Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe.
Those performances have alerted Bayern Munich, who have already had success signing attacking players from the Premier League, including Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Diaz.
Gordon has been less prolific in the Premier League, though, scoring six goals and providing two assists in 26 appearances.
According to the Daily Mail, the 25-year-old’s injury is not likely to be serious enough to damage his World Cup hopes, and Newcastle are hopeful he will return for the final weeks of the season.
But it remains to be seen if Gordon will feature again for the club, three years after his arrival from Everton.
