Why Virat Kohli will not lead Delhi in Ranji Trophy

NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli is set to make his first domestic cricket appearance since 2012 as the India batting superstar gears up to feature in Delhi's final Ranji Trophy group match against Railways. The game is scheduled to begin on Wednesday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

On Tuesday, Kohli joined the Delhi team for an intense practice session. He started with a light football warm-up, followed by a lengthy stint in the nets, where he faced spinners and pacers. He concluded his day with fielding drills.

The last time Kohli led Delhi was during the Challenger Trophy tournament in September 2013.

Why isn’t Kohli leading Delhi in the Ranji Trophy?

Reports suggest Kohli was offered the captaincy for this game but declined the role. Ayush Badoni will continue to lead the side, while star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant will not be part of the much-anticipated clash.

Apart from Kohli's inclusion, there are no significant changes to the Delhi squad.

Kohli’s Ranji Trophy Record

Kohli has an impressive record in the Ranji Trophy, having played 23 matches and scored 1,574 runs at an average of 50.77. His tally includes five centuries and five half-centuries.
