Why Thomas Tuchel was furious with Cesar Azpilicueta in first half of Everton vs Chelsea

Chelsea struggled to get going in the first half of their Premier League clash with Everton on Sunday. The Blues controlled possession in the opening period at Goodison Park, but the Toffees’ high press restricted the visitors to limited opportunities.

Everton, who saw their relegation rivals Burnley pick up a crucial three points on Saturday afternoon, knew they had to pick up a win against Chelsea, who are still looking to cement a place in the top four. It seemed like a much bigger match for the hosts than it did for the visitors.

Thomas Tuchel would do his best to guide against that, though, and make sure his side are in the best possible shape for the match at Goodison. However, in the first half of limited chances for either side, the game turned out to be a bit scrappy.

One moment that stood out in the first-half was Tuchel, who cut a frustrated figure on the touchline in the opening 45 minutes, losing his cool with Cesar Azpilicueta. The Chelsea captain kicked the ball out of play and Tuchel threw his hands up in a furious manner after what he just saw from his centre-back.

That moment sort of summed up the first-half for Chelsea, with the loud atmosphere inside the stadium clearly playing a part in how the half panned out. Moments later, Tuchel was again visibly agitated with what he was seeing as Kevin Friend blew for a free-kick for Everton after what looked like very minimal contact.

Tuchel was not impressed with what he had seen from his side, that was clear. He will, however, hope he can get a message to his team across at the half-time break.
