Why the Championship play-off final kick-off time has changed for today's Huddersfield Town v Nottingham Forest game

The richest game in football kicks off this afternoon when Huddersfield Town face off against Nottingham Forest in the Championship play-off final.

Usually the promotion decider kicks off at 3pm on a Saturday - as was the case in last year's showpiece event between Brentford and Swansea City at Wembley.

But this year things are different. Why so? The match is being held today - a Sunday - and at 4.30pm instead of 3pm due to the Queen's Jubilee.

The play-off weekends this year involving Championship, League One and League Two sides have been split due to the celebration of the Queen's platinum milestone of 70 years on the throne. Usually they would take place on the Saturday, Sunday and Monday across the May bank holiday weekend. The League One play-off final, held last weekend, saw Sunderland see off Wycombe Wanderers, while yesterday Port Vale beat Mansfield Town 3-0 to book their place in the third tier for next season.

Today's kick-off time of a later-than-usual 4.30pm slot has been chosen by broadcasters Sky.

If the game later were to go to extra-time and penalties, the finish time could be close to 7.15pm, meaning a tricky trip home for supporters heading back to Nottingham and Huddersfield on a Sunday evening.
