Why Sunderland will wear red shorts in their Championship clash with Hull City

Sunderland will players will look a little different in their Championship match with Hull City at the Stadium of Light next month. The club have confirmed they will be wearing red shorts instead of their traditional black in a bid to raise money for their charitable arm, the Foundation of Light.

Tony Mowbray's play-off hopefuls take on Hull City on Wearside on Good Friday in front of the television cameras, and the Black Cats are using the occasion to raise money for the Small Change Big Difference campaign, and showcase the work done by the charity, who help struggling families in the area.

According to studies, the North East has the highest rate of child poverty in the UK, while 40 percent of the city's residents are said to live in relative poverty, and the work Sunderland's charitable group do helps those families impacting, especially given the cost of living crisis engulfing the country.

Sunderland's back-of-shirt sponsor, Eleven Sports Media, have allowed the Foundation of Light to be printed on the back of the home shirts, with the match-worn shorts signed and auctioned off after the game to raise further funds for the charity. The club have also agreed to donate £1 to the charity for every match ticket sold for the 5.30pm visit of Liam Rosenior's side.

“Small Change, Big Difference has a simple message; by donating a small amount, or whatever you can, each month, you can make a real and life-changing difference to children, older people and families across the region," the foundation's Lesley Spuhler said.

Hull City hosted a similar event of their own last season, to raise money for the Tigers Trust. Giacom agreed to remove their name from the home strip for the league clash with Fulham, allowing the Trust to be emblazoned across the front of the shirts, and the club ran a Tigers Trust takeover against West Brom.
