Why Rangers youngster sees pathway after signing new Ibrox deal

Rangers goalkeeper Rydnn McGuire turned down options in England after deciding his future belonged at Ibrox.

The 17-year-old agreed a three-year contract extension with Rangers last month, despite transfer offers from England dating back to his first professional deal in 2025.

McGuire, a boyhood Rangers fan, said his decision was based on the opportunity to progress into the club’s first team.

He told the Rangers Review: “If I didn't see a pathway or a future at Rangers, I would never have signed the new contract. Having that pathway there is ultimately the whole reason why I signed it.”

He joined Rangers from Dundee United as a 14-year-old and has since become the club’s third-choice goalkeeper, behind Ivor Pandur and Liam Kelly.

The 6ft 5in goalkeeper was a regular for the Under-18s soon after arriving and helped Rangers win the CAS Elite U19 league last year.

He was first involved in first-team matchday squads during Barry Ferguson’s time in charge and has remained part of the group. McGuire is now officially listed as a first-team squad member.

McGuire said: “I do believe I'm going to play for Rangers, so I need to have that belief in myself. Whatever I did, when I was sitting before it, I was probably saying to myself, ‘I need to back myself whatever I do.’”

He said interest from other clubs had been difficult to ignore, but that Rangers remained his preferred destination.

McGuire said: “You hear about other pathways and you hear other noise [from other clubs]. As a young player it's hard not to listen to that stuff. But Rangers was always the place I wanted to be and when I saw the pathway here it was exactly what I wanted.”

His progress has seen him move quickly through the club’s system. After signing professional terms aged 16 in 2025, he became involved with the first team full-time around Christmas that year.

He has since been included in most matchday squads and believes his latest agreement confirms his changing status at Ibrox.

McGuire said: “There was a bit of a dilemma when I first came into the club where it felt like if you were older, you were going to play. That was the vibe I got when I first came into the building. Then I started the Under-18 season and probably never lost the jersey from then.”

He also made his Scotland debut, played in the UEFA Youth League and produced performances in Old Firm matches. In one Glasgow Cup Final penalty shoot-out win, he made three penalty stops.

McGuire said: “Signing the new deal was a big one. The first professional contract is big, but when you sign your first one after that, that's your proper contract. That's something you can kick on from.”

The new contract keeps him at Rangers as he continues to compete for a future first-team role.
