Why Prince Harry travelled alone to Balmoral after initial plans to fly with Meghan

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were due to attend the WellChild Awards in London yesterday evening, but cancelled their plans after news of the Queen's poor health emerged.

Just after 12.30pm on Thursday, Buckingham Palace issued a rare statement saying that doctors were concerned about the monarch's health, but that she remained "comfortable" at Balmoral.

The announcement prompted a number of senior royals to travel to Scotland to be with Queen Elizabeth II.

At about 2pm, it was reported that Harry and Meghan would be flying to Scotland together, but plans changed and the Duke of Sussex travelled to Balmoral without his wife.

It has not been confirmed why the Duchess of Sussex eventually remained in London - but there have been suggestions that the decision was linked to the fact that the Duchess of Cambridge did not travel to Scotland either.

Just like his brother Prince William, Harry travelled to be with his family - but without his wife.

Kate Middleton decided to stay in Windsor with her three children and was photographed while driving to pick up Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis from Lambrook School.

At 6.30pm, Buckingham Palace released a statement to confirm Her Majesty had died, saying: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

"The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

Harry was wearing a black suit and tie as he sat in the back of a car, and was whisked to the royal estate.

He had flown into Aberdeen Airport alone, just hours after his brother and two uncles flew together to the same airstrip.

According to reports, the late monarch spent her final moments with Charles and Anne at her bedside.

A number of other senior royals - including Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and Sophie Wessex - sadly arrived after she died.

This morning, Harry flew south to be with Meghan after mourning with his family. Before boarding the plane, he was comforted by an airport worker.

His father Charles - now King Charles III - also travelled to London, where he met Prime Minister Liz Truss before delivering an address to the nation.

Following Queen Elizabeth's death, Harry and Meghan paid a sombre tribute to her as they changed their website to a blacked-out landing page.

The Archewell homepage now has the words: "In loving memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 1926-2022."

The Sussexes are now expected to extend their stay in the UK until after the funeral.

Harry has always spoken of his close relationship with his grandmother, and in an interview earlier this year he claimed to be the late monarch's "closest confidant".

After a brief visit to see the Queen in April, the Duke of Sussex said: "I haven't had a chance to go back to the UK for a couple of years apart from those times, once for my grandfather's funeral and once for unveiling a statue of my mum.

"Being with her, it was great.

"It was great, it was really nice to see her in some element of privacy, which was nice.

"It was just so nice to see her … She’s on great form. She's always got a great sense of humour with me and I'm just making sure she's protected and got the right people around her.

"We have a really special relationship, we talk about things that she can't talk about with anybody else."
