Solar panels are a long-term investment, so deciding when to buy is less about finding a perfect moment and more about whether the numbers work for your home. Installation costs remain substantial, and the savings depend on your roof, electricity use, export tariff and how much of the power you generate you can use yourself.
There are nevertheless several reasons homeowners may be considering solar panels in 2026. The Ofgem energy price cap rose by 13 per cent in July, increasing the value of electricity generated and used at home. Zero per cent VAT on qualifying domestic solar installations is also scheduled to end on 31 March 2027, after which the rate is due to return to 5 per cent.
