Why Nick Pope stands out in a crowded pool for Newcastle United's Player of the Season

It's that time of the year once again with Newcastle United's player of the season award up for grabs.

In recent years the title has gone to Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maximin (twice) getting the honours at St James' Park. This year there could easily have been eight or nine candidates for the gong but we've had to whittle it down to just four. Now it's over to you.

On the list are Nick Pope, Joelinton, Sean Longstaff and Alexander Isak with the Sweden international having a brilliant second half to the season.

From the list that has been selected, I'd be tempted to go with Nick Pope as the player of the season personally. This was a big season for the Newcastle keeper after arriving from Burnley for £10million and replacing popular stopper Martin Dubravka between the sticks.

That was a huge call at the time for Eddie Howe given Dubravka's bond with the Newcastle faithful but it didn't take long for fans to start singing Pope's name. By the time United played Brighton & Hove Albion on the second game he'd kept a clean sheet and had his own chant.

In the end, he picked up 14 clean sheets as he showed his worth for the Magpies with only one blot in his copy book coming against Liverpool when he was sent off.

That was a rare rush of blood from Pope with the ban meaning he would miss the Carabao Cup final the next week against Manchester United.

Had Pope played at Wembley you never know if his style of play might have enabled Newcastle to get out quicker and press Man United from back to front, and perhaps he might have dealt better with the goals.

We'll never know but what we do know is that Pope's 14 clean sheets were only bettered by David De Gea.

Some of Pope's saves have been incredible but for me - fittingly - the last gasp stop in front of the Leazes End against Leicester City as Timothy Castagne was denied ended up being the decisive moment to earn Champions League football.

Of the other candidates, Longstaff can be proud after establishing himself as a first choice midfielder in a very competitive engine room pool.

Isak's first season has been impressive with his raw skills and goalscoring a certain asset next season for the Magpies, while Joelinton once again has been immense and his battling qualities and eye for goal shone through.

The fact he's been handed a Brazil call-up says it all. But it's Pope's name on the trophy for me.
