The Two-Category Trap at Every Beauty Counter
Walk into any beauty counter in a Lifestyle or Shoppers Stop and the first question a makeup artist will ask is: "Are you warm or cool?" The question assumes those are the only two answers. For a significant portion of Indian women, they are not. Neutral undertones sit in the middle of the warm-cool spectrum, pulling neither yellow-gold nor pink-blue in any consistent direction. But because most foundation shade systems, and the training scripts that go with them, are built around warm and cool as the two poles, neutral skin gets misread almost every time. The makeup artist sees a medium-to-deep complexion with some yellow in it and calls it warm. The woman goes home with a foundation that pulls orange by noon. She blames her skin. The shade system is what failed her.
