Why Mauricio Pochettino has not been announced as new Chelsea manager yet

There is nothing to be concerned about for Chelsea supporters with the imminent appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as the club's new first-team head coach.

On Saturday evening, football.london brought you the news that the 51-year-old had agreed a deal to become the Blues' new permanent boss at the end of the season. After weeks of negotiations with Chelsea, with Pochettino representing himself, the two parties finally agreed on a deal at the weekend, just hours after the Blues' 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest.

Pochettino is expected to be in London to sign the contract this week and finalise the deal to see him take over at the end of the season. The former Tottenham manager is expected to sign a three-year deal at Stamford Bridge – and that is still the case.

While the reason for the slight hold-up and the fact we haven't heard any proper updates since the weekend is unknown, a source has told football.london that this was always expected and there is nothing to be concerned about in that regard. It's ultimately up to Chelsea as a club when they announce the deal. The Blues could even wait until the end of the season until it's made official to the public, but that remains to be seen.

How Chelsea ended up with Pochettino

Graham Potter was dismissed as Chelsea head coach at the start of April and attention quickly turned to who would replace the 47-year-old in the dugout. However, the club were determined to take their time with the process and not rush into any decision over Potter's successor. The club's board want the next manager to be the one who spearheads their ambitious long-term project.

Bruno Saltor took charge for one game – the 0-0 draw with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge – before Frank Lampard made a dramatic return to the club on an interim basis until the end of the season. Julian Nagelsmann and his representatives were one of the many coaches Chelsea spoke with, but there was a disagreement with the German and the two parties quickly moved on.

Then all attention turned to Pochettino. The Argentine has been without a job in football since leaving Paris Saint-Germain last summer and while he had offers to return to the sport, he was holding out for the right opportunity. Pochettino sees Chelsea as that opportunity after positive conversations with the club over the vacant managerial role.

Pochettino doesn't have an agent and actually represents himself, so negotiations were somewhat different to normal procedures in these situations. The former PSG boss has more of a personal involvement so when negotiating, he wanted assurances over his role at the club. However, there was a shared keenness from both parties to get the deal done and that has now happened, albeit it's not official yet.

Nothing to worry about if you're a Chelsea fan. It's just formalities and it will now be up to the club when they announce it or brief the media.
